A stroll around after lunch, with streets untouched by modernity, sparsely inhabited, but enchantingly peaceful and beautiful. Places like this hold so much history. The church of Sant Mary of the Assumption was originally built in 1561, and has had its moment of fame, being featured in the 2014 film Lords of London starring Ray Winstone. Apparently some of the houses here also still have bullet holes from the front line fighting between a retreating German army to the north, and the advancing allies in the south. The “Banda Palombaro” was formed initially to sabotage and disrupt the German occupation of the area, but later was part of the armed rebellion of the Abruzzese against the occupying army. The Gustav Line ran just a couple of kilometres south of here, as does the Sangro river, and the local Canadian Moro River war cemetery and the commonwealth Sangro River war cemetery are testament to the immense effort to reclaim and liberate Abruzzo in 1944. Many villages have never really recovered, with dwindling and aging populations. That’s why you should come and visit! 🇨🇦 🌹
