Castiglione Garfagnana: Lucca and around

16/11/2015

CASTIGLIONE GARFAGNANA
Castiglione takes its name after the primitive “castrum” (war castle) built by the Romans, that developed in the times of the Longobards and Franks in Italy. The whole town is a monument, as it is very rare today to find a fortified “borgo” with almost completely preserved walls and a Rock that still holds its primitive splendour, with still majestic turrets. From Castiglione the Natural Reserve of the Orecchiella extends for more than 52 square kms, from the sweet round slopes of the first ridges of the Apennines to the harsh crests of the twin calcareous massifs surrounded by sheer walls and steep gorges. Due to this variegated morphology one finds many diffent natural environments with diverging microclimates, which influences the flora and its forms. Ascending from the chestnut and oaks groves at lower altitudes to the the upland prairies, one sees small beech forests and conifers reafforestations under the slopes, and then only thick beechwood up the mountainside. The importance of this floristic diversity is largely recorded in Orto Botanico della Pania of Corfino, owned by the Union of Garfagnana Municipalites. Wonderful mountain flowerings and blossomings can be seen in the Mountain Flowers Garden, kept by the Corps of Forest Rangers near the Reception Centre of the park. Also the fauna is interesting, especially for the many artiodactyls: deers, roes, boars and moufflon. But there are also many other species, such as hares, squirrels, dormice, foxes, martens, and a main predator, wolves. Bears are a case apart, they were living on these mountains until the end of the eighteenth century, and now are back to the Orecchiella: a protected faunistic area gives hospitality to seven bears, part from a zoo, others born there. Other sections are dedicated to deers roes and moufflons, and are organized in a facilitated pathway leading the visitors, with didactic trails and the possibility of excursions, also of more than one days. They all start from the Reception Centre, that has its own naturalistic museum, projection room, library and labs. The organization caters to both schoolchildren and young and not so young tourists: there are mountain refuges and huts, restaurants, a camping area and a trailers area, and a shop selling typical culinary products. You can take walking excursions in the park, or rent mountain bikes or a horse, to discover the secrets of this surprising natural area. There are also guided tours offered by a local guides cooperative (Coop. Garfagnana Vacanze).

Truffle: the Food of Kings!

During four weeks, starting from middle November (exactly on November 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29, and December 5 and 6 2015), the 45th San Miniato National Market Festival of the White Truffle will be held in the town near Pisa.

The white truffle of the Pisan Hills, a geographical area extending toward the inner part of the Pisan countryside, is the Tuber Magnatum Pico, the food of kings, the most precious and celebrated underground fungus in the world, found with the greatest care just a few inches underground, and only in a very limited number of areas all around the world. The fungus cannot be cultivated by man; only a lucky combination of forest vegetation and geological substratum can cause it to grow naturally in these few areas.
Brillat Savarin wrote: “truffles can make women tenderer and men milder”.
Among those areas so blessed by nature for white truffles, San Miniato is one of the most celebrated, and holds various records for it.
The ancient historical centre of town, with its narrow alleys and picturesque little squares, becomes in these days the greatest open air lab of tastes and flavours in Italy, where gourmets and simple visitors can meet to enjoy the very best products of oenology and gastronomy, not only truffles.
At the court of King White Truffle there are famous courtiers, such as the red wines (also Chianti) from the San Miniato vineyards, the extra-virgin olive oil of these lands, delicious cold cuts, typical sweets and cakes, local cheeses, and other excellent products of the nearby hills.
And more than 120 producers and exhibitors will present the very best products from this area and the whole of Tuscany at their stands.
Moreover, in the beautiful Piazza del Seminario, you will find the Officina del Tartufo, the White Truffle Workshop, with renowned Italian and foreign chefs cooking their best truffles recipes on the spot.
But the San Miniato National Market Festival is but the acme of this extraordinary seasonal offer devoted to truffles. On the hills around, in the very heart of the land where truffles are found, among forests and fields, more intimate, small fairs take place. In the small “borghi”, the oldest dynasties of truffle-hunters offer their treasures in advance. An autumn you cannot miss!

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec: Or, How to Relive fin-de-siècle Paris

On October 16 the great exhibition on Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec will open up in Pisa, in the magnificent venue of Palazzo Blu. With his extraordinary production of groundbreaking graphic works, the French painter deeply renovated and remodelled the world of art, beginning its contemporary phase, and abandoning the typical canons and themes of the late nineteenth century.

By his very large and impressive output of paintings, lithographic works, playbills and placards, Toulouse-Lautrec more than anyone else succeeded in rendering the life and character of a city and its atmosphere, with all the colours of a generation. What we see is the very life style of Paris about at the end of the nineteenth century, with all its myths, the Moulin Rouge, Montmartre, the “maisons closes”, and so on: that fabulous period straddling two centuries when the Ville lumière was the undisputed world capital of the arts.

The scientific director of the exhibition is prof. Maria Teresa Benedetti, a well-known scholar in nineteenth century French art and a Toulouse-Lautrec expert.

More than 150 works by the artist of Albi will be present: the complete collection of his famous posters, a careful selection of paintings, and, for the first time in Italy, one of the most complete collections in the world from Toulouse-Lautrec’s graphic: first editions, and a number of lithographic works with pencil dedications and notes in the hand of the artist himself.

Among the most important works at the exhibition: the paintings Femme se frisant (1891), Femme Assise (1893), and the oil on cardboard Soldat anglais fumant la pipe. Among the posters, the celebrated Moulin Rouge, and La Goulue. The latter is a portrait of a famous dancer stemming from Lorraine, Louise Weber, known as la Goulue, that is the Glutton. It is also the first poster in a long series of graphic works in which Lautrec radically renovates the genre, turning it into a real artistic expression, and thus anticipating the modern concept of designer advertisement.

The exhibition is enriched by a selection of works by the so-called Italiens de Paris, masterpieces by great Italian artists of the same period, such as Boldini, Natali, Zandomeneghi, and Macchiati - all of them influenced by the art of Toulouse-Lautrec for their themes or style.

The exhibition will be open until February 14 2015.

TORRE DEL LAGO
Sunny beaches, a large and fresh pine forest, a placid lake: a natural balance that makes Torre del Lago Puccini an ideal place for both excursions and longer holidays.
Set between the Massaciucoli Lake and the Tyrrhenian sea, between the Alpi Apuane and the Migliarino-San Rossore-Massaciucoli Park, it is an ideal starting point for visits to the main historical cities in Tuscany, all within easy reach, or for long walks and excursions through the protected pine forest and on the mountains nearby.
On the lakeside, near Puccini’s villa, now turned into a museum dedicated to the great musician, every year in summer a musical opera festival is held, since 1930. All performances are open-air, and truly unforgettable due to the unique charm of the surroundings. The small region around is the Versilia, and Torre del Lago is its most naturalistically attractive part. But it is also a region that caters both to high-class tourism and to young people, with many clubs and bars along its beautiful promenades.
The Torre del Lago downtown and coastline, however, are a popular touristic resort, because of the natural beauty of the place, fair prices, and a vocation for “friendly” tourism. The beach has several bathing establishments, but it is still to a large extent a free beach, one of the last in Italy, and famous for that, as it keeps its original appearance. It’s the “spiaggia della Lecciona” (from holm-oaks). It is part of the national park, and is completely free. It attracts many tourists, however, both for its unique beauty and the famous dunes green with vegetation and flowers.

SIENA
Siena, lying right in the heart of Tuscany on hilly ground, and surrounded by hills, is certainly one of the few most beautiful medieval cities in Italy. It owes part of its fortunes and character to the Via Francigena, which crossed it along its north-south axis and used to connect Rome to Northern Europe. Thousands of pilgrims passing through the area caused the birth of “borghi” and monasteries, and the economy of Siena was boosted, producing the great artistic and cultural flowering of the Renaissance.
Piazza del Campo, the shell-shaped square that is the venue of the emotional Palio, was and is the heart of Siena. Declared part of humankind’s cultural heritage by UNESCO, it hosts the wonderful symbols of Siena’s medieval times and of its already glorious past. The Palio among the Contradas is a thrilling horse race taking place twice a year, in July and August, absolutely not to be missed because of the unique atmosphere of excitement pervading the whole city. The Campo is dominated by the reddish Palazzo Pubblico, once the Seat of the Signoria (Government), and now of the Municipality and of the remarkable Civic Museum. The high Tower, called the Torre del Mangia, is accessible through the internal courtyard and through its 500 steps can be climbed up to the top, from which one enjoys a splendid view of the whole city. Absolutely not to be missed also the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the most important churches in Italy in mixed Romanic-Gothic style, with an unmistakeable facade in white and black stripes of marble, and inside, the Piccolomini Library, and, among other treasures, a great cycle of frescos by Pinturicchio. Behind the Cathedral stands the Baptistery of Saint John, with a precious christening font by Jacopo della Quercia. It is a joy to walk through the large medieval centre and beyond, among splendid palaces from the middle Ages and the Renaissance, such as Palazzo Palazzo Tolomei, the oldest one, and Palazzo Salimbeni, originated in the fourteenth century, to discover the most elegant and noble aspects of Siena.
But there is more beyond art and culture and elegance, there is also a unique gastronomy. In taverns and historical cafes and fine restaurants you can find the tasty Ricciarelli (and Panforte), the sweet symbols of the city, and salami, cold cuts, cheeses, soups and game dishes, all to be accompanied by the great Siena wines.

VIAREGGIO
A bright sea on one side, mountains white with snow or marble on the other side: this is Viareggio, the pearl of the historical region called Versilia, a town with a beautiful, 3 kms long promenade, richly adorned by art nouveau buildings and with a shining night life. The culture of tourism always went hand-in-hand with a rich artistic life in Viareggio, the best examples are the Musei Civici di Villa Paolina and the splendid art nouveau and art deco buildings everywhere in the city.
But Viareggio means Carnival, above all. It’s the “Carnevale di Viareggio”, four weeks of real madness, when tourists from all parts of Italy, and not only Italy, come to admire the “allegoric chariots” (huge trucks with papier-mâchè statues on them) as they parade through town among the general rejoicings. These funny triumphal carriages are hand-made in an old, traditional way, but they are contemporary too, making fun of political events and characters. After laughing about home and foreign politics, the Carnival crowd goes on through all the districts in town and then to the harbour: every weekend in turn, one of the four district hosts dances, musical events and balli in maschera - fancy-dress dances. (Cars are not allowed in the Carnival streets.)

SASSETTA TERME
Sassetta Terme is a renowned, old watering place. Rich in phosphates, calcium and traces of health-enhancing elements, Sassetta’s thermal waters spring out at a constant temperature of 49 C. (120 Fahrenheit) and are ideal for rest and relaxation. Sassetta is really an unique place in Tuscany, the place and its rich natural environment is wild and unknown to tourists, but its complex of high-altitude thermal facilities with basins at different temperatures, set among old oaks and chestnut groves, provides a wonderful discovery for any visitor.
One can also have lunch or dinner with organic products in this beautiful, dreamy setting. Up the hill, the old medieval “borgo” with its castle waits for you for one of the many events (concerts, installations, exhibitions) supported all year by the municipality. One can also leave from Sassetta for trekking on foot, on bike, or on horse through the many pathways in the countryside.

SUVERETO
Suvereto is an enchanting old medieval village set among oaks, chestnuts, and, as the name suggests, cork-oak groves. In its cobbled streets one finds plenty of artisan workshops of many types, as old traditions are still treasured here. The surrounding countryside reaches to the sea and is crossed by the “strada del vino” (wine street). There are many grape-growing companies and farms, artisan cellars and olive-presses. One can taste typical wines and other genuine products of the area: the wild boar with olives is a special treat.
From Suvereto one can very quickly embark to the Isola d’Elba.

28/09/2015

MASSA MARITTIMA
Massa Marittima is a remarkable “art city”, but is still well outside current touristic routes, lying as it is under the so-called “Metalliferous Hills”. It is the gateway to the Tuscan Maremma, with its wild landscapes so different from the “Crete” around Siena and in Val d’Orcia.
Its circle of walls is very well preserved, and within it the city rises on a hill, with narrow alleys and streets up to the wonderful Main Square, where all the typical buildings of the life in the medieval “età dei comuni” (the age of city-states) are assembled: the imposing Cathedral, a well-known masterpiece, the Palazzo del Podestà (the City Governor), the Lodges of the City Market, and the City Hall. But the oldest part of town is higher still, and is dominated by a Fortress, with its Clock Tower. The view from here reaches down to the sea.
The surrounding area is very interesting, both from an archaeological and a naturalistic point of view. There is the archaeological Park at the Accesa Lake, and everywhere trekking paths and places for pleasant walks. Even mushrooming is possible in autumn. The sea is very near, and, to the West, also the evocative San Galgano Abbey is easy to reach.
