🎲 Gambling in Ancient Pompeii: A Hidden Vice 🏛️

Among the of ancient Pompeii, fascinating evidence of gambling, especially dice games, has emerged. Despite efforts to curb this "vice" through laws like the lex tabularia of the Republican era, gambling was incredibly popular in the city.
One of the most captivating examples is an ancient fresco from an inn on Via di Mercurio (Regio VI, Insula 10). It depicts a lively dice game amid sausages, onions, and other food.

Another fresco, from a tavern in Regio VI, Insula 14, now housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, illustrates four animated moments of a dice game. It even features inscriptions of colorful and threatening phrases exchanged between the players as a disagreement escalated—until the innkeeper intervened and threw them out!

💡 Did you know?

Emperor Augustus reportedly lost 20,000 sesterces in a single game.
Nero was a passionate gambler, and Emperor Claudius even transformed his carriage into a gaming table, complete with a mechanism to keep the dice steady on bumpy roads. Claudius is also said to have written a now-lost treatise on dice games!

In Pompeii, taverns and inns were the epicenters of this risky pastime, where locals gambled over wine and meals. This led to a booming business: the creation of tabernae lusoriae, the first gambling houses.

Our Story

Our Tour Operator is called "Askos" which is a symbolic name. The word indicates a type of ancient Greek vase used to store liquids such as olive oil and wine.

The founder, Emiliano Tufano, once found an askos in an archaeological site during an excavation. Since then, it became for him the expression of the thrill of exploration, and a symbol of excitement and oblivion.

It all started in 2010 with the "PompeiIn" brand. Emiliano was fervent about promoting the wonderful historical heritage in the area around Vesuvius, especially in Pompeii, Herculaneum and in the city of Naples.

In 2016 Askos Tours began its life and from that moment organizes guided tours (group and private) throughout Italy with particular interest in the Campania region, Rome and the Vatican. For the foreseeable future, there is the plan of further expanding the offered services.
