The scene is set in the baths of Pompeii. In the foreground a woman playfully sprays another who is bathing in the 'frigidarium', a cold bath. The artist based this work on photographs of the ruins of the Stabian baths, discovered by archaeologists in 1824. He made them more luxurious by adding a marble floor and walls that would more commonly be found in larger imperial baths. This small work was a huge success when it was exhibited and was immediately purchased by the state museum.

At the Foundation Banco di Napoli, from 2 March to 16 June 2024, the exhibition of the painting "The Taking of Christ" by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, curated by Francesco Petrucci and Don Gianni Citro.
The work, before arriving at Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia (Rome) last year and now inatPalazzo Ricca, had only been exhibited in 1951 at the historic "Exhibition of Caravaggio and the Caravaggesque painters", curated by Roberto Longhi (who had found it in 1943), when it was dirty and with various repaintings, removed after the recent restoration.

It is one of the most intense and pathos-rich compositions of Caravaggio's Roman activity, of which two autograph versions can be traced: the one now on display at the Foundation Banco di Napoli and the one from the Jesuit Company in Dublin, on deposit at the National Gallery of Ireland since 1993.
The two versions are endowed with formal and expressive autonomy, with the Ruffo version taking precedence, of which the Irish one is a replica with revised pictorial and layout features.

The exhibition will be accompanied by didactic panels that give an account of the history of the composition, through the research of the numerous copies and variants and an accurate documentation of all the diagnostic results carried out in the last twenty years.

The exhibition "The Other Pompeii. Common Lives in the Shadow of Vesuvius".
Among the various sections of the exhibition, which recounts the daily life of common people, made up of slaves, freedmen, artisans and workers of various categories, we also find one dedicated to Spirituality and Death.
Pictured here is a glass urn with lid, inside a metal container, from the funerary enclosure of Marcus Venerius Secundio outside Porta Sarno.
The light green urn, with two 'M'-shaped handles, covered by a lid also made of glass sealed with lime mortar, is inside a metal container made of lead alloy. The urn was filled with six litres of a dark wine-like liquid, extracted before the bones were micro-excavated. Plant remains were also found inside the urn. Next to it was a white marble slab (columella) with the inscription NOVIA AMABILES, also visible in the exhibition.
