December 8th is a bank holiday in Italy and traditionally it’s the day when we decorate our houses for Christmas. , lights and the nativity.

Saint Martin’s day, is truly central to the Italian traditions of the fall and the link with wine is strong!
November 11th was the beginning of the agrarian year. On that day, farmers and vine growers, would celebrate with lucullian meals, offering their new and best wine to family and friends. It was a day of gratitude for the harvest and propitiatory for the new agricultural year. That’s why San Martino is considered the patron saint of winemakers, grape pickers and sommeliers!
Many are the proverbs still used today that recall this traditions. “A San Martino ogni mosto è vino”: on Saint Martin’s all must becomes wine. This is the period of the year when new wine, or vino novello, is ready. Usually a very fruity, floral and approachable wine accompanied with “caldarroste”, roasted chestnuts. A real treat!
