The importance of choosing (and testing) the right shoes for your trek cannot be overstated. It honestly can be the difference between a fantastic walking holiday with views to die for and an abysmal 2 weeks of suffering, pain and constant annoyance. No joke...

Utterly breathtaking. Taken on the Alta Via 1 in the incredible Dolomites Sept this year.
So thankful UNESCO listed the Dolomites as a World Heritage Site in 2009.

⛰New Trek for 2023! Walking holiday in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco

HOW HARD IS THE TREK?

Whilst the trails along the route are not technically difficult, there is enough elevation gain and loss each day, to make this a strenuous and demanding challenge. We have graded this trek a grade 8.

We have built-in two ascents to summits over 4,000m (although the ascent of Ouanoukrim. Is optional) and daily elevations range from just 300m to 1,310m (4,300 feet) and descents from 353m to 1,407m (4,616 feet).

Have a look at our latest blog for more info on the trek, or at our trek grading pages for more information on what you can expect from a grade 8 trek with Mont Blanc Treks.

How a mountain climber became an inspiration for women everywhere..

We've told you a little about our new favourite role model, Isabella Stratton, pioneering alpiniste who made the Chamonix valley her home. After climbing together for twenty years, Isabella and Jean a local mountain guide eventually married. They both adopted the same surname ‘Charlet-Straton’. Was this perhaps another indication of Isabella’s rejection of female stereotyping and Jean’s acceptance of his partner’s achievements?

Isabella and Jean Charlet Straton lived out a long and fulfilling life in Argentiere where she is buried. Argentiere is the overnight destination for the penultimate stage of the Tour du Mont Blanc, (you could visit if you're interested).

Isabella and Jean’s sons became climbers, achieving Mont Blanc summits aged thirteen and eleven! Their grandchildren opened a hotel in Chamonix in memory of their pioneering English grandmother. Quite a family!

Isabella, perhaps unknowingly became not only a feted celebrity pioneer and role model for female mountaineers but also the image for the emerging women’s rights to vote movement in England.

All in all quite an inspiring story! If you’re in Hotel Pointe Isabelle at the start or finish of your trek do have a look in the hotel lobby.

Tour du Mont Blanc 2022 – Food 🥗🥖🍰
Honestly, the food alone makes the Tour of Mont Blanc unforgettable! Each time I remember the food in each of the countries I cannot wait to get there!

Each country has its own character; the Italians have their espresso and home-made pasta, the French have fresh baguettes and wonderful cheese, and the Swiss have their chocolate and fondues! Every region has its own wine (of course!) and they all share an afficionados love of local meat and cheese.

Seriously, what’s not to love!?

Tour du Mont Blanc 2022 – Accommodation

The accommodation is busy! However, we are fortunate to have great relationships with local guest houses, hotels and the refuges, so we’ve had no problems and enjoyed not just cosy accommodation, but great hospitality.

I love watching Clients faces as we turn the last corner of the day, and the accommodation comes into view! Having climbed or descended (or both!) around 3,000 feet (915+ metres) and walked over 12 (20km) miles who wouldn’t be happy to see the faces of the guest house owners waiting to greet them?

The Tour Du Mont Blanc continues to be an absolute dream for us to host our guided treks and plan your self-guided treks - and is a must for any serious hiker’s bucket list.

Isabella Straton – Early Alpiniste – Wow!

Mary Isabella Straton (1838 – 12 April 1918) was a pioneer and to have accomplished what she did, must have been incredibly bold.

We've created a whole blog around her as we are so inspired by her achievements! The hotel in Chamonix that bears her name “Pointe Isabelle” is worth a visit if only to give yourself a fascinating visual glimpse into what life was like back then. The lobby of the hotel houses early black and white photographs of her expeditions which allow Isabella’s story to unfold. Although the first photographic cameras had been invented earlier that century, these are supplemented with artistic images of Isabella.

Even what women wore in those days makes you wonder how she reached the peak of Mont Blanc among many other ascents - climbing in a full length gown with a corseted bodice and petticoats!

Other photographs taken at the time show that Isabella must have made a conscious and bold decision to dress for the mountains. Isabella cuts an impressive and athletic figure in knee length breeches with boots and gaiters. She wears a hip length woollen jacket, brimmed hat and white scarf. In gloved hands (she mentioned frost bite in a diary entry), Isabella carries a long staff. Her accompanying guides are dressed similarly with ice axes, ropes over their shoulders. And smoking a pipe seems to be quite typical for the mountain guides of this era!

Mont Blanc 2022 – Trail Conditions

We've fallen in love (again!) with the Tour du Mont Blanc

The conditions this year along every section of the trail are superb. The weather is constantly changing, but there is nothing unusual in that, and the trails are well maintained.

Each section of the trek has its own identity and every day, you can bet that the effort is worth it. (There’s a reason why the Tour du Mont Blanc is one of the most famous hikes in the world!)

Girl Power! The Fantastic History of a Female Mountaineer

Isabella Straton was a pioneer alpiniste. Born in the south of England she was well educated and wealthy. Isabella was introduced to climbing and mountaineering in her twenties, by her friend Emmeline.

They travelled together to the Alps and Pyrenees with the ambition to hike, climb and go on expeditions. In the French Alps Isabella met the talented French mountain guide, Jean Charlet and together they made many ascents, including summiting Mont Blanc four times, notably the first ascent in winter. Isabella’s high mountain achievements were significant for a female in any era, and also included a first ascent of Pointe Isabella.

🏔 Tour du Mont Blanc 2022 – Hiking Routes🏔

The Tour du Mont Blanc this season is awesome. And we have walked it a lot!

We’ve done the full route, starting and finishing in Chamonix, (the adventure capital of Europe). The Westerly TMB which starts in Chamonix and follows the mountain trails anti-clockwise the French Alps and Italian Alps finishing at Courmayeur. And the Easterly route: starting in Italy in the wonderful village of Courmayeur and walking around 62 miles (100km) through the Italian Alps, into the Swiss Alps and finishing in the French Alps at Chamonix.
