1) In the Sassi you will not only find houses dug out of the rock, but also ancient Palombari, huge underground cisterns that reflect water like mirrors. One of the largest, the Palombaro Lungo, is so large that it looks like an underground lake. 💧
2) The Madonna della Bruna, patron saint of Matera, is the protagonist of one of the most exciting processions in Italy, culminating in the destruction of the triumphal float. The statue of the Madonna is said to be a protective figure with roots in pre-Christian earth and fertility cults, a symbol of rebirth for a city that has always managed to regenerate itself. ✨
3) Looking at Matera from above, the Sassi look like an intricate labyrinth of alleys, stairs and rooftops. But there is something special about it: every roof is someone else's floor, in an interweaving of life and architecture that tells of a unique concept of community. 🏘️
