This ancient square at the center of Rione Trastevere is dominated by the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore from which it takes its name. Considered the oldest in Rome, the Basilica was built in the same place where a fountain was at the time of Emperor Augustus. On one side of the square, adjacent to the Basilica, is the 17th-century Palazzo San Callisto owned by the Holy See. The fountain in the middle of the square is one of the oldest monumental fountains of Rome, already documented in the plan by Pietro del Massaio (1471) with a shape substantially similar to the one visible today: a polygonal basin in the center of which two overlapping basins rise (later reduced to one).
The history of this beautiful fountain is particularly troubled and summarized in the four epiraphs inserted in the lower basin. Important restoration works were promoted in 1604 by Clement VIII Aldobrandini (1592-1605) and above all by Alexander VII Chigi (1655-1667), who in 1659 increased its water flow, until then very scarce in all neighborhood. Gian Lorenzo Bernini restored the fountain by inserting four double shells facing outwards. In 1692, under the pontificate of Innocenzo XII Pignatelli (1691-1700), Carlo Fontana replaced the Bernini shells with the current ones, larger and facing inwards.

The visit includes the magnificent Sistine Chapel, whose name has its original inspiration in Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere, who was Pope from 1471 to 1484 and commissioned the restoration of the ancient Magna Chapel between 1477 and 1480. The wonderful decoration of the 15th century walls, including the false drapery, the Stories of Moses and Christ and the portraits of the Popes, was carried out by a team of painters, composed at first by Pietro Perugino, Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Cosimo Rosselli, supported by their workshops and some of their closest assistants, including Biagio di Antonio, Bartolomeo della Gatta and Luca Signorelli.

“The most beautiful relic of ancient Rome, a temple so well preserved that it appears as the Romans must have seen it in their times,” so described it the French writer Stendhal in the 19th century. A source of inspiration for the greatest architects of all ages, its beauty, the harmony of the lines and the perfect geometries have always struck people both in the past and the present. The story of one of the best preserved examples of Roman monumental architecture begins in 27 BC, when Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, a close friend, son-in-law, and lieutenant to Augustus, commissioned a temple in this area dedicated to “all the gods”. The present building is, however, the result of the radical reconstruction by Hadrian between 118 and 125 AD, who expanded it, reversing its orientation and opening a large square with a portico in front of the new temple.

Trastevere, pronounced “tras-TEH-ve-ray”, is rione XIII of Rome, otherwise known as its 13th District and means literally, “beyond the Tiber.” trastevere rome logoVery rich in history, Trastevere was captured by the Romans during their Regal Period (753-509 B.C.) to gain access and control of the waterway on both sides of the river. Since it was solely a strategic move, Romans were not interested in building on that side of the river and Trastevere was left to flourish by its own means. Fisherman began to settle on that side of the river along with immigrants coming from the East. Since the outpost was mostly ignored by the Romans, citizens of Trastevere developed a culture all their own which allowed it to become the unique, eclectic city it is today. Trastevere with it’s narrow, winding streets, diversity of nightlife and hidden archaeological gems, now houses an international body of artists, students and expatriates who love the area’s rich scenery and abundant secrets.

According to a legend, on the Colle degli Ortuli where the Basilica stands (Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo), there is the cursed tomb of the su***de emperor Nero, whose ashes were buried in a porphyry urn under a walnut. Near the main altar of the church, some bas-reliefs recall the story."
