House of Neptun and Amphitrite
Herculaneum, Italy
When Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, it buried not only the city of Pompeii, but a number of other nearby towns as well. One of them was Herculaneum. Among the many houses in Herculaneum is a relatively small, but richly decorated town house, called the House of the Neptune Mosaic, which must have belonged to a wealthy family.

He rehabilitated citizens who, through the intervention of the censors or by conviction for fraud by the judges, had been stripped of their prerogatives. He divided the elections between himself and the people, so that, with the exception of the candidates for the consulship, as regards the remaining number of candidates, half were proclaimed those whom the people wanted, and the other half those whom he himself nominated. And he indicated them using notes sent to the various tribes, with a few lines: "Caesar dictator to such and such a tribe: I commend such and such to you, so that with your vote they may have their office". He also admitted the sons of the proscribed to the positions. He reserved the trials to two categories of judges, of the equestrian order and of the senatorial order; instead he suppressed the "tribunes of the revenue", which were the third. He took the census of the population regardless of the practice and the usual places, but neighborhood by neighborhood, making use of the owners of the buildings. He reduced from 320,000 to 150,000 those receiving subsidies in wheat from the . In order to avoid that, during the revision of the census, gatherings would get agitated, he established that every year, in place of the deceased ones, the praetor would draw lots among those who had not been included in the previous list. On April 8, 217 Caracalla was assassinated in , while leading an expedition against the Parthians: "Not long after the agreement between the two (the emperor and the Parthian king Artabanus V), Antoninus , who was in Carre in Mesopotamia, wanted to leave his quarters and go to the temple of the Moon (very revered deity from those peoples). The temple was far from the city, so it was a matter of a not indifferent march; but the emperor, in order not to move the whole army, set off with a few horsemen, proposing to celebrate a sacrifice for the goddess , and return immediately. During the journey he was forced, to satisfy an urgent natural need, to retire apart with only one servant. All therefore withdrew, and remained apart as a sign of respect. Martial, who was always ready to seize a On a favorable occasion, seeing that Antoninus was left alone, he approached him pretending that the emperor had called him to ask or tell him something; and pounced on him while he was taking off his robe, he struck him on the back with a dagger which he kept hidden within easy reach. . The blow to the collarbone was fatal, and Antonino was killed before he could realize the danger. As he fell to the ground, Martial leapt on his horse and fled; but the German knights whom Antoninus favored and kept as an es**rt, being less distant than the others, were the first to notice what had happened, and pursued Martial, managing to kill him."
