The very excellent English travel writer Simon Calder ( ) once wrote "Rome wears history as a casual bauble." He was, of course, spot on. It's not like the Romans take what they have around them for granted but there is probably too much to remain in awe of all of the time. A bit like about only 5% of Parisians have been up the Eiffel Tower and something similar for Londoners visiting the Tower of London. They are just there and have always been there.

For any visitor to this vibrant city with almost 2,800 years of recorded history it is impossible not to be in awe of the vast amount of historical monuments around every corner, but the Romans who live amongst them every day have become quite good at understating them if not overlooking them completely. A typical example would be that of the “sacred area” of what was the Theatre of Pompey. Sightseers look over the Largo di Argentina from Via di San Nicola de Cesarini at the remains of the four ancient temples little knowing that this was the place of the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. Imagine if this site were in London or Washington or Newcastle New South Wales. The street might be called Julius Caesar Street or the square might be called Assassination Square. Well, possibly not but you get where I am coming from. No, the Romans named this square after a tower that no longer exists (there is a medieval tower in the corner called Torre del Papito literaly the “Little Pope’s Tower”, I kid you not)! My point being that, to get the most out of this fascinating city you either have to do an awful lot of reading beforehand or, perhaps, seek out a local guide.
