Tiber Island is the only island inside the Tiber River in Rome. Connecting to the mainland via two bridges – Ponte Cestio and Ponte Fabricio – it was once home to the Temple of Aesculapius – the Greek God of medicine and healing, and in 1584 the Fatebenefratelli hospital was built there.

Walking or driving, Piccolomini is something fun and curious that must be experienced while in Rome!

The location in itself is a simple street with a good view of Saint Peter’s Basilica’s dome, but it packs a secret! During evening hours, locals arrive on their motorbikes to drive up and down this street.
They aren’t here to see the view. Instead, Via Piccolomini attracts visitors who want to see it perform an optical illusion!
As one moves towards the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, the building appears to shrink. If one moves backwards, it appears to grow bigger!

Moses by Michelangelo

Dating from 1513 – 1515, Moses by Michelangelo is an understated masterpiece. At eight feet high, the sculpture was intended to be part of a grander two-storey tomb for Pope Julius II. However, Michelangelo had to compromise with a scaled-down version due to pausing work to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel ! Look out for the horns, a mistranslation of the Hebrew word describing rays of light shining from Moses’ head.

The Tomb of Pope Julius II is located in San Pietro in .

This beautiful palace was built in the 17th century upon orders of Pope Innocent X, a member of the Pamphilj family. Close to some of the most famous places to visit in town – the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, among others – inside the palace you’ll find a gallery with more than 400 paintings on display, with pieces by Caravaggio and Velazquez, and a statue of Pope Innocent made by Bernini.

The Pyramid of Cestius is definitely one of Rome’s more unusual sights. Built as a tomb for Gaius Cestius, little is known about the man once buried here as the tomb was ransacked long ago. But, according to his will the 120 foot pyramid was complete in an impressive 330 days. Jump off the metro at the aptly named station Piramide and marvel at the only “Egyptian” pyramid in Europe.

is a massive complex and one of Rome’s best preserved ancient sites. Construction began in 206 AD, under the direction of Emperor Septimius Severus. His son, Caracalla, finished it 10 years later, after killing his brothers to seize exclusive control of the empire. The baths could accommodate 1600 people. The original brick walls are still standing, a towering shell.

Bramante’s Tempietto church once housed Raphael’s Transfiguration before it was moved to the Vatican Museums. In the church courtyard is a teeny tiny chapel, a church in its own right. It was built on the spot where St. Peter was martyred. It’s a great example of High Renaissance architecture, one of Rome’s only circular churches.

Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, named the “Catholic King and Queen” by Pope Alexander VI in 1494, commissioned the Tempietto in memory of their son John. They hired famed architect Bramante to build the church and Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the crypt below it.

The curious legend of Rome's much-loved .

The maritozzo is a classic sweet pastry, traditionally packed full of whipped cream.
The dough-based bun is typically eaten in Rome for breakfast but can also be eaten as a hefty snack, or dessert, throughout the day.
The maritozzo gained widespread appeal in Rome in the Middle Ages as the church allowed it to be eaten during the traditional period of fasting during Lent, earning it the nickname "er Santo Maritozzo."
As for its name, "maritozzo" is derived from "marito", the Italian word for husband. In the 19th century the maritozzo became central to another curious tradition: men would propose - on the first Friday of March - by presenting their future brides with an engagement ring hidden inside a maritozzo.

The Coppedè district is a corner of Rome with unexpected and bizarre features, a fantastic mixture of Art Nouveau or Liberty, Art Decò, with influences of Greek, Gothic, Baroque and even medieval art.
Coppedè, brainchild of Florentine architect Gino Coppedè (built 1913-1927), is a jumble of historic style all whipped together in a dramatic frenzy. Nature is the principal inspiration; daring and eccentric curved lines seek freedom from tradition, coexisting with modern sensuous ironwork. Coppedè is Rome’s answer to the Gaudì structures of Barcelona.

The thumbs-up gesture has its roots in ancient Rome, where gladiators would literally live or die by it. Pollice verso is the Latin term for the gesture, meaning "with a turned thumb."
"It was a hand gesture that was used by the crowd to say if the gladiator should live or die after a fight”.

Tratoria

🇮🇹
The word trattoria is equivalent with the French traiteur—meaning a catering business with the purpose of providing take-out food. Although many trattorie have adopted restaurant-style practices (such as upscale quality and atmosphere,) traditionally the trattoria is the closest Italy gets to a fast-food venue.

Campo de 'Fiori means 'field of flowers 🌺 a name derived from the Middle Ages when the area was still a meadow full of flowers. The square is very lively and colorful in the morning because of the daily fresh market with flowers, fruit, herbs and vegetables . In the evening there is a lot of drinking on the terraces and in the bars around the lively square.

Executions used to be held at Campo de 'Fiori. For example, in 1600 philosopher Giordano Bruno was burned alive for heresy. Exactly on the site of his death is now a statue from 1889, in which he faces the Vatican

* – Travertine: The limestone which was used in the main pillars and walls were strong and brought from Tibur.
* 2 – Tuff: Tuff is softer than travertine and it brings elasticity.
* 3- Concrete: Concrete was invented by the Romans. It was cheap, quick to make, and easy to use.
* 4- Bricks: Bricks were mixed with water, sand and tiles.
* 5 – Iron / Bronze Clamps: In order to bind stones together these clamps were used.
* 6 – Marble: Marble is used both in decoration and the entrances of the cavea in Colosseum. Some of the columns are also made of marble. The first three marble rows were for the nobles and special guests.

The Arch of Constantine is the largest of the three triumphal arches still preserved in Rome, about 25 meters high, located along the road usually used by the triumphs, in the stretch between the Circus Maximus and the Arch of Titus.

The arch was erected in 315 to celebrate the victory of Emperor Constantine over Maxentius, which took place on 28 October 312 AD in the battle of Ponte Milvio. It was built by partially reusing materials and architectural elements from more ancient imperial monuments, belonging to the age of Trajan, Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius.

The Temple of Venus and Rome was one of Rome’s most colossal temples.  Constructed by Hadrian, and dedicated in 135 (though possibly not completed until 145 by Antoninus Pius, according to numismatic evidence depicting the temple), it essentially enveloped the Velia hill, a small contiguous mound adjoining the Palatine hill.

If you come to Rome in the Springtime, then you need to put artichokes right to the top of your must-try list. These beautiful globe thistles don’t look particularly edible to the untrained eye – but in Rome the weirdly addictive metallic flavour of artichoke is a perennial favourite. Trimming the prickly blighters is a tricky business, and watching Roman greengrocers expertly go about the task is an almost hypnotic experience. The most prized varietal is the regal and large ca****fo Romanesco that’s only in season during the Spring, and in Rome they come served in one of two ways.
The first style is known as carciofi alla Romana The second style is carciofi alla giudea – Jewish style artichokes synonymous with Rome’s historic Ghetto.
