🔍 Did you know that one of the strangest buildings in Rome is located in Via dei Cerchi, a few meters before the intersection with Via S. Teodoro ?
The façade, built in the seventeenth century, concealed one of the entrances of Horti Farnesiani. The building, currently owned by the Benedictine Fathers Olivetani, has been restored some years ago. On top of the building a hand with its forefinger facing the sky.

👆Why is that hand there? What does that mean? Where does it come from?
The first records date back to the twelfth century, when in the Catalogue of the churches of Rome, compiled by Cencio Camerario in 1192, appears the church of "Sancte Marie de Manu". This small church, located on the southern slopes of the Palatine, took its name from a huge marble hand, probably coming from a colossal statue built with the technique of the acrolith (the head, hands, feet and arms were made of marble, while the rest of the body was made of wood, bronze and other materials).

🏛 Portico of Octavia was built on the same place as a more ancient building, the "Portico of Metellus", erected by Q. Cecilio Metello Macedonico in 146 and inaugurated in 131 B.C. The plate is written in vulgarized Latin: "Capita piscium hoc marble schemate longitude majorum usque ad primas pinnas inclusive conservatoribus Danto", which means that all the heads of the fish exceeding the size of the marble slab (1.13 meters) should have been handed over to the Conservatives.”

🌹 Did you know that the Rose Garden is home to about 1,100 species of roses from around the world, even from China and Mongolia?

Among the most curious, the Rosa Chinensis Virdiflora, with green petals, the Rosa Chinensis Mutabilis, which changes color with the passing of days and the Rosa Foetida, a smelly rose.

🌿 Covered with vegetable gardens and vineyards until the end of the 16th century, it became, in 1645, the Garden of the Jews with the adjoining small cemetery of the Community. From 1934, the year of the transfer of the Jewish cemetery to the Verano cemetery, the area, destined by the general urban plan of Rome to become a park, remained uncultivated until 1950, when it became the new municipal rose garden. The ancient one, which was on the Oppian Hill, had been destroyed in the second world war.

⛪️ The Church of Santa Maria dell'Orazione e Morte located in Rione Regola, along Via Giulia in Rome, was built in the sixteenth century by the Confraternity of Prayer and Death and stands on an ancient cemetery dedicated to the Christian burial of abandoned bodies?

💀 The aim of the Archconfraternity of Prayer and Death was to bury the dead, found in the countryside or drowned in the Tiber, without identity or in any case who could not receive a worthy funeral. In addition to the church, an oratory and a large cemetery were built, partly underground and partly on the banks of the Tiber.

🔍 Did you know that….

⛲️ Fontana del Mascherone of Santa Sabina located in Rione Ripa on the Aventine hill, dates back to 1936 when the architect Antonio Muñoz decided to build a valuable fountain and a portal to Parco Savello? But the original work was sculpted in 1593 by Bartolomeo Bassi. After its construction it was placed above the granite basin and used as a drinking trough for the beasts that grazed in the area.

The Mascherone was then taken to Porto Leonino and placed inside the Fontana dell'Acqua Lancisana. There it remained for almost a century until the whole structure was removed to open the Lungotevere.

🍊 Only later in more recent times, Antonio Muñoz managed to find in a warehouse both the granite basin and the Mascherone. He placed it inside a niche that is located along the walls of the Giardino degli Aranci where it is still beautifully displayed.

🗺 Recently one of the most affectionate customers of our Creative Director Giuliano Catapano, who had been to Italy before and had already chosen Zest Italy tours in Rome back in 2018, requested a tour in Sicily for her parents and her grandson in March of this year. Our travel consultant Vanessa Bottero organized their tour in Sicily, including Catania, the Etna Region and Palermo. Not only she arranged their tour schedule but also supported them for a special request.

🌟 One of the main desires of the client was to visit the town of Acquaviva Platani (Caltanissetta), where her great-grandparents were born, and then left for the United States at a very young age.

Our travel advisor Vanessa wanted to make sure that their travel was more than just a vacation in Italy, but an authentic journey to the places where their ancestors once resided. With the assistance of our team of experts and with the mayor of Acquaviva Platani's consent, we began our searches at the municipal archive with the precious help of Nino Pardi, a local guide.

The house where her great-grandfather was born, the documents that testified to the departure for the United States, the arrival in New York and the temporary stay in Ellis Island waiting to be admitted to the United States, the documents and pictures of their marriage before leaving and the meeting with a relative who still lives in the town.

👀 The story of the majestic “Fontanone” can be traced back to the ‘500 and ‘600. In fact, Trastevere was without water during that time and Pope Paul V (born Camillo Borghese) decided to do something. He restored the aqueduct Traiano that brought water from Lake Bracciano and began building this fountain to celebrate the work. The Fountain as we see it today is however also the result of a subsequent intervention.
