Do you know the behind these huge bronze doors❓

I'm here to tell you about it!

They were made in the 1st century BC for the Curia Iulia, the rebuilt Senate House commissioned by Julius Caesar. How many secret plots, crucial decisions and passionate speeches must have been made behind these doors over the centuries!

But their story doesn't end with the fall of the Roman Empire 🏛️, because in the 7th century the disused Senate House building became the church of Sant'Adriano al Foro, and a thousand years later, in 1660, Pope Alexander VII had the immense doors moved to the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, where they now grace the main entrance to the building.

Every time I see them, I seem to feel centuries of history still resonating and echoing through time. Isn't it fascinating to think how many famous people have touched them or walked through them? 📜

Do you know the legend connected to the street known as Via della Gatta (literally: Street of the Cat) in Rome? 🔎🐈

It is said that one night a fire broke out in this area and the inhabitants were awakened by the insistent meowing of a cat, thanks to which they were saved and they had time to put out the fire.

The statuette of a cat on the building that stands on the corner of Piazza Grazioli almost certainly comes from the temple of Isis, which once stood here in the so-called Field of Mars (Campus Martius) in ancient Roman times.

In fact, several statues were brought to Rome from Egypt, and they can still be seen in various points of the city, but I will tell you more about this another time, in another post!🤭

If you walk down this little Roman street, look up and follow the cat’s gaze. She seems to be staring at something intriguing in the distance, perhaps a hidden treasure? 🕵‍♀

📸 Don't forget to take a photo of the cat and tag me!

Have you everencountered the phrase "Love conquers all” in the original Latin ‘’Omnia vincit amor’’? 🤔

It might seem to be taken from the Bible, but it was actually penned by the great Roman poet Virgil (in his collection of poems known as the Eclogues or the Bucolics, written in the 1st century BC. 🌿💌

🔍 The complete phrase is “Love conquers all; and let us surrender to love’’ (Omnia vincit amor et nos cedamus amori).

In the tenth and last poem of the Eclogues (line 69), Virgil puts these words into the mouth of his friend, the elegiac poet Gaius Cornelius Gallus, during a desperate love-sick lament. This immortal phrase has come down to us over the centuries to remind us that love, in its many forms, is one of the most powerful forces in the universe.

But it is really true that love conquers all❓

What is the true symbol of Rome and what embodies the spirit of this incredible place?

This is what I asked myself while I was trying to come up with the right image for my logo.

Then I realized that the answer was connected to the word ROMA itself.

In fact, the Ancient Romans worshipped a goddess called Roma, who represented the city in a symbolic form and who embodied the powerful values and virtues of Roman civilization.

She looked a bit like Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and war, who was also represented as a beautiful warrior maiden, wearing a helmet and armour. ⚔

This was the perfect idea! The use of bright red makes this unique logo very striking, while the fact that so few people know about the goddess Roma makes her particularly intriguing!

In a way this hidden figure represents the hidden history of Rome, which is exactly what I want to tell you all about… with an Amazing touch!

Had you ever heard of the goddess Roma ❓

📜 Augustus made of Rome a capital city worthy of an empire, and his famous phrase "I found a city of bricks, and left it a city of marble" still resonates throughout history, reflecting the transformations he made to this city and marking a new political beginning, as Rome transitioned from being a Republic to an Empire.

Under Augustus several radical changes were, in fact, made to the city, including the creation of the Forum of Augustus, two new aqueducts (the Aqua Julia and the Aqua Virgo), the Pantheon (on the site of the famous building we can admire today, which was a radical reconstruction made under the Emperor Hadrian) and the Ara Pacis, the prestigious monument that Augustus decreed to celebrate himself and the Julio-Claudian dynasty that he founded (comprising the first five Roman emperors) thanks to the period of peace he brought to Rome after the civil wars!

Do you know our ItalianISSIMO holiday? 🇮🇹

Tomorrow, August 15th, is the holiday of Ferragosto! 🎉

This mid-August festivity has fascinating ancient origins.

The term Ferragosto derives from the Latin "Feriae Augusti" (Festivals of Augustus), which was a holiday and a celebration established by the Emperor Augustus in 18 BC (who gave his name to the month of August).

📅 Originally celebrated at the beginning of the month, it was intended to give agricultural workers a well-earned break from their hard work in the fields in the period leading up to the grape harvest. It was a sacred day dedicated to the gods, marked by horse races and banquets.

Today Ferragosto is still a popular holiday throughout Italy, combining ancient agricultural traditions with the Christian feast of the assumption of the Virgin Mary.

For many Italian families, it is an opportunity for meeting up, eating together and spending a joyful day, a bit like a sweltering hot Christmas in the middle of Summer! 🥂

Tell me in the comments what your favourite holiday is in your own country! 💬👇

🌞 "Dolce far niente" 🌞

This Italian expression literally means “sweet doing nothing” and it extols the virtues of doing absolutely nothing and really enjoying it! 😎

After conducting many summer tours under the hot Roman sun 🔥, I too need a bit of "dolce far niente". It's the best thing for restoring the balance to one’s soul and mind!

In fact, taking a break is sometimes the most productive thing we can do for ourselves. Who would have thought that simply doing nothing at all could be so beneficial? 😉

Here I am, immersed in the "sweetness" of doing nothing! 🏖️

What's your favourite way to practice a bit of "dolce far niente"?

What is the Grattach**ca? 🍧🌞

With every spoonful of this sweet delight you take a leap back into the past of Rome!
Did you know that the ancient Roman patricians started the tradition of eating ice?

They enjoyed a dessert called nivatae potiones, made with snow, to which honey and fresh fruit were added.

The grattach**ca that we know and love today is a summery pleasure that has been popular since the early twentieth century. It is made of ice scraped by hand from a block called the ch**ca and flavoured with the addition of fruit syrup or juice and pieces of fresh fruit.
It is the perfect fresh and tasty treat to enjoy on hot days in Rome!
You might almost say that a grattach**ca a day keeps the heat away! 🍋

I am now at the famous stand of Sora Mirella, which has been popular with the people of Trastevere since 1915, especially for those who, after leaving the Fatebenefratelli hospital on the nearby Tiber Island, perhaps after a painful dental treatment, rushed to cool off their mouths by eating ice with syrup, often directly from the empty skins or rinds of fruit.

Remember: the grattach**ca is not drunk, so much as eaten! 🌞🍧

So what do you eat when you want to cool off in the summer? Let me know in the comment section!

Have you ever heard the expression “money has no smell” (sometimes quoted in the original Latin: “pecunia non olet”)?

If so you may have wondered about its possible origin.

📚 In Ancient Roman times, the Emperor Vespasian introduced a rather strange tax on urine, known as the centesima venalium, which cloth workers known as fullones (from which derives the English word fullers) had to pay. They used the ammonia extracted from urine collected in public latrines to wash cloth and to remove stains or discolouration. Taxing such an indispensable chemical product ensured a steady income for the state, and when the emperor’s son, Titus, criticized this practice as being unworthy of the dignity of Rome, his father invited him to sniff a handful of coins and pointed out that money (unlike urine) has no smell.

Indeed, no matter where it comes from and regardless of its origin, money is always useful and valuable! 💸

These inhabitants of the Colosseum are neither tourists nor archaeologists, but furry creatures who have made this ancient monument their home. 🏛

Cats are in fact an attractive and beloved part of Rome's identity.

According to the legend Cleopatra herself introduced cats to the Romans! 🐾

It is said that, when Julius Caesar brought her to Rome the Egyptian queen was accompanied not only by her son Caesarion, but also by a couple of cats. They settled in Caesar's gardens (the "Horti"), located between Trastevere, the Janiculum and what is now the district of Monteverde, and Cleopatra then generously left them as her gift to the Roman people.

With the decline of the empire, their descendants moved into the Colosseum, which became their feline fortress. 🏛

These cats thus represent the link between the past and the present, and they continue to prowl around as the guardians of the ancient ruins of the city! ⚔️🐈

👀 And where have you spotted these cats? 💬👇
