This curious sculpture, designed by Bernini in 1667, symbolizes strength (the elephant) holding up wisdom (the Egyptian obelisk).

Did you know that the Dominican friars originally wanted the pedestal to consist of six hills (referring to the coat of arms of Pope Alexander VII of the Chigi family) and four guard dogs at the corners? ๐Ÿ•

The dogs symbolized the Dominicans, since the name of this religious order sounds like the Latin words โ€œDomini Canesโ€ (the Lord's dogs)!

๐…๐ฎ๐ง ๐Ÿ๐š๐œ๐ญ: The rejected projects included one by Father Domenico Paglia, who criticized Bernini's proposal. With the advent of Christianity, the beautiful virgin goddess was transformed into an old witch, benevolent but a bit scary and ugly, who symbolizes ๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ฐ๐š๐ฅ, because when the new year arrives we leave the old behind and we welcome new beginnings.

Lentils are in fact shaped like little coins๐Ÿช™ and they are rightly considered a particularly valuable foodstuff, because they have such excellent nutritional properties!

In ancient Roman times, a leather bag full of these small legumes was given as a gift, with the hope of attracting good luck and profit in business!

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ The TABULAE LUSORIAE were portable or fixed boards for playing and today I'll show you a great example that still survives!

This is a game carved into the marble pavement in the Roman Forum, near the site of the ruined temple of Caesar.

๐Ÿ”Ž It consisted of rolling small marbles across the stone, while trying to avoid the holes and get past a finish line.

๐Ÿ› This game must have passed the time for generations of Romans, during long waits, while Cicero and his colleagues gave their endless speeches in the nearby law courts or Senate House!

๐Ÿ“Œ Another more complex game-board is carved into the marble steps of the Basilica Giulia, and would have been played like checkers or tic-tac-toe, with pieces made of pottery or bone.

It seems obvious that, even though they had no Tetris, Game-boys or Candy Crush, the Romans were able to entertain themselves in their spare time!๐Ÿคช๐ŸŽฒ

โœจ Did you know that on the evening of December the 24th, Pope Francis will inaugurate the Jubilee by opening the so-called Porta Sancta, or โ€œHoly Doorโ€.

This door in St. Peterโ€™s church is only open during a Holy Year (a Jubilee), and then it is closed and sealed by a masonry wall. ๐Ÿงฑ

On December the 2ndโ€, a metal box was freed from the cement of this wall with the blows of a hammer and removed, in a ritual known as โ€œrecognitionโ€.

๐Ÿ”Ž Guess what was inside it? The key to open the Holy Door! ๐Ÿ”‘

๐Ÿ˜ฑ It also contained the door handles, the parchment testifying to its last closure in 2016, as well as four golden bricks and some papal commemorative medals!

In 1857, a 12-meter-high column was erected in piazza Mignanelli, right next to the Spanish Steps. It was intended to commemorate the Catholic dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, promulgated by Pope Pius IX just 3 years earlier.
