Trying to escape the heat this morning I drove to Castelgandolfo.
This small town nested on the Roman hills offers the view over the sapphire blue lake of Albano.
This village is mostly known for being the Popes' summer residence.
The Papal palace built over an ancient imperial villa and the medieval castle of the Gandolfi family became the Pope's summer residence from the early 17th c.
Open to visitors in 2016 is a little gem close to Rome.
Here are my pictures.

These days is so hot that it is necessary to try all the gelato types😄.
This is a watermelon cremolato: it differs from standard ice cream or sorbet since cremolato is made only with iced fruit puree. Nothing else.
Not easy to find generally but delicious and very refreshing

Did you know that Romans loved dormice and porcupines and had special dormice farming in terracotta jars (Vivaria in doliis) known as glirarium?
Peacocks too were used to decorate the table but their flesh war rather hard and after the discovery of America they were replaced by turkeys with softer meats and easier to breed.

So hot this morning that even statues will get sunburnt.
But it's good to have plenty of water everywhere and for free.

This week temperatures are high due to the first summer heatwave.
I was guiding in the Roman Forum around noon when I looked up towards Palatine Hill and saw this group of nuns that probably were not very comfy in the robes.

In a quiet morning while the city is still asleep and out on the streets were just a few people going to vote for the European government elections I rode my bicycle in the neighborhood parks.
Schools just closed for summer holidays last Friday, temperatures are going up and now the weekends in the city are quieter since many Romans flock towards the beaches.
Final stop at the Sunday farmers market which is normally very crowded but summer is here and Romans are out. I got my veggies on the backpack and back home.

Abruzzo here I am again.
Escaping Rome chaos for a couple of days in my tiny village perked on the hill.
I love the slow paced life here.

Every year on the Pentecost Day the Italian Fire Brigade men throw red petals in the "eye" of the Pantheon at the end of the mass to commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles. .
Just spectacular!

I'm often asked if the oculus of the Pantheon has a glass window.
The answer is in the picture I took today in the late afternoon.

Heading to work.
Early morning, streets are quiet because of the long bank holiday: tomorrow is Labour's Day
Iconic Rome: the Colosseum, the sampietrini cobblestones, the scooter... the light of Rome.

One quick visit to my house in Abruzzo.
I'd like to plan for 2025 some short trips considering that Rome will be awfully chaotic with the Holy Year 😅
My offer for 2024 is for daytours only at the moment.

When in Rome don't miss out the museums of Palazzo Massimo and the Baths of Diocletian.
Palazzo Massimo contains an astonishing collection of statues, mosaics and paintings that once decorated the houses, temples, squares of ancient Rome.
In the Baths of Diocletian admire the immensity of the ruins of the largest baths in Rome, look at the epigraphic section with some 10000 inscriptions that range from daily life, political, business subjects and sorcery!
Sit and enjoy the magnificent chiostro designed by Michelangelo.
You can purchase a combo ticket for both and enjoy the quietness of these museums unfortunately not visited by many, but which house top rated art & architecture.

Have you ever stepped into a garden painted 2000 years ago?
The dining hall in the Villa of the empress Livia.
