Why are train tracks in most of the world 143.5 cm away from each other? The explanation dates back to the ancient Romans: that was in fact the distance between the wheels of the ancient Roman chariots and the furrows left or made on purpose on the ancient Roman roads had just this distance. Because? Because that was the minimum space required for two horses side by side to pull the chariot. It was therefore the Roman wagons that established many centuries ago, and still impose today, the measure of the gauge of the railway tracks, and consequently the width of the wagons and tunnels in which the trains must pass. Fascinating, right?
