🇺🇸 MOSAIC OF FISH IN THE CAVE OF THE FATES, PALESTRINA, II BC

🐠 Mosaics containing detailed representations of different fish species were produced in large numbers in many parts of the Roman world.

🐠 The compositions is connected to the interest in fish and seafood that flourished in Italy during the Late Republican period, and it may have drawn inspiration from earlier fashions in the Hellenistic East.

🐠 Mosaici contenenti rappresentazioni dettagliate di diverse specie di pesci sono stati prodotti in gran numero in molte parti del mondo romano.

🐠 Le composizioni sono collegate all’interesse per il pesce e i frutti di mare che fiorì in Italia durante il periodo tardo repubblicano, e potrebbero aver tratto ispirazione dalle mode precedenti nell’Oriente ellenistico.

🇺🇸 BOXER AT REST. PALAZZO MASSIMO ROME

🥊 The bronze statue Boxer at Rest was excavated in Rome in 1885 on the south slope of the Quirinal Hill.
The broad-shouldered, lanky pugilist is depicted just after a match sitting on a boulder to rest after the unnerving tension of the fight.
Despite his exhaustion, the muscles in his arms and legs are still tense, as if the battered champion were ready to spring up and face a new combatant.

🥊 Boxing was an ancient and revered sport in antiquity. It was introduced into the Olympic games in 688 B.C. and became an integral competition at all the major panhellenic sanctuaries where athletic events were held in connection with religious festivities. During the Roman Imperial period, the boxing gloves worn by gladiators developed into deadly weapons with sharp metal or broken glass points.

🇮🇹 IL PUGILATORE A RIPOSO. PALAZZO MASSIMO, ROMA

🥊 Il Pugilatore in bronzo fu ritrovato a Roma nel 1885 sul versante sud della collina del Quirinale.

L’atleta è raffigurato nel momento immediatamente successivo ad un incontro di boxe, seduto su un masso in atteggiamento di riposo che trasmette l’intensa tensione della lotta appena conclusasi.

Nonostante il suo esaurimento, i muscoli delle sue braccia e delle sue gambe sono ancora tesi, come se il campione malconcio fosse pronto ad affrontare un nuovo combattente.

🥊 La boxe era uno sport antico e venerato nell’antichità, introdotto nei giochi olimpici nel 688 a.C. Nel mondo greco la boxe divenne una competizione in uso presso i principali santuari panellenici dove si svolgevano eventi atletici in relazione alle festività religiose. Durante il periodo imperiale romano i guanti da boxe indossati dai gladiatori si evolvono in armi mortali con l’aggiunta di punte di metallo affilate.

ELMO DI COTOFENESTI 🎭🏺🗿

👉L'elmo scolpito in oro è appartenente ad un re di una tribù Tracia è databile 400 a.C.
👉La maggior parte dell'elmo è ricoperta da grandi borchie attorno alla testa, sulla parte frontale sono scolpiti due occhi apotropaici, che si credeva allontanassero la magia malvagia, come il malocchio.
👉Le guance dell'Elmo di Coțofenești raffigurano un sacrificio animale: un uomo nell'atto di sacrificare un ariete tagliandogli la gola con un coltellino. Alcuni studiosi hanno collegato queste scene di sacrificio ai Misteri Mitraici incentrati sul dio Mitra che sacrifica un toro.
👉Nella parte posteriore dell'elmo sono raffigurate bestie feroci, secondo un motivo comune all'arte Assira.

HELMET OF COTOFENESTI 🎭🏺🗿

👉The golden helmet belonged to a king of a Thracian tribe from 400 BC. 👉The largest part of the Helmet of Coțofenești is covered with large studs around the head. Across the forehead portion of the gold helmet are two carved apotropaic eyes, which were believed to ward off evil magic, such as the evil eye.
👉The cheeks of the Helmet of Coțofenești depict an animal sacrifice: a man is sacrificing a ram by slitting its throat with a small knife. Some relate it to the Mithraic Mysteries that focused on the god Mithras killing a bull.
👉The neck guard of the Helmet of Coțofenești contains two voracious beasts, a common motif in Assyrian art.
