We recently hosted something entirely new…! A jewellery making class with a jewellery designer from London .london
Jessica trained as a jewellery designer/maker at the prestigious colleges Central Saint Martins & The Royal College of Art. She has since set up her own jewellery brand and has been running that for 6 years.
Marina & Jessica met in London during her new collection launch ‘creatures of the deep’. They hope to host more classes like this over a retreat at Villa Il Cardinale, so stay tuned for more information!

Introducing Marina, the owner & hostess of the retreats at Villa Il Cardinale.
Marina grew up in this beautiful villa, and her family were the first to uncover the Ancient Roman ruins on this site.
As an experienced yoga instructor, her retreats are accessible for all and can be adapted for varying levels of experience within yoga.
Away from her work at the villa, Marina is an academic professor, with a background in classics, fine art, art history & journalism. She has taught at some of the most prestigious arts universities, and curated a number of groundbreaking exhibitions. She is also an author of various publications...the list goes on!
As such, her knowledge in the history of art serves as an added plus for those enthusiasts joining the retreats at the villa. She is always happy to delve into Roman history & give advice on the best sites, art galleries and museums to visit in the centre Rome. Overqualified, she is a multifaceted hostess and a font of knowledge!

Villa Il Cardinale is of course a historical site, but it’s a home that has housed generations. Marina has opened the house up to the public, but every room is filled with objects of sentiment. See here a photo of Marina’s parents on their wedding day.

This beautiful villa resides on the site of a 2000-year-old Roman Imperial Post.
What is an Imperial Post you may be thinking…?
A stop over for emperors returning from their campaigns abroad in North Africa, before they ventured into the main forum in the centre of Rome. They would wait at the villa in order to determine the political atmosphere in Rome. Was it safe for them to enter the city? Could they freely walk under the Triumphal Arch or would they be murdered upon returning home?

A selection of ancient Roman ruins found on the site of Villa Il Cardinale. We can see here a section of white marble, from what would have been the ceiling. You can see the incredible section of Roman wall, and mosaics still preserved on the floor in various areas of the garden. What a spectacular building it would have been in its day!

You may look at this and think ‘that’s a very unusual looking rolling pin’…
It’s a very unique rolling pin used to make traditional Italian pasta, ravioli. You can learn to make pasta from scratch on our retreats with Marina, the owner of Villa Il Cardinale. These techniques have been passed down for generations. Marina’s mother taught her to make pasta in their exquisite Roman kitchen with original vaulted ceilings. You too can share in this experience…!
Marina likes to listen to Vivaldi when she’s cooking, saying ‘it’s lively, you need lively music when you’re cooking’.
