THE HAND OF CICERON:
On one side of Circo Massimo, the former chariot racing stadium, there is an old street called "Via dei Cerchi" where you will see a house with an exuberant baroque facade that will surprise you.
In the middle of the street, you will notice some old buildings on the right. Among them, there is a bizarre building with a flat facade, elongated like a mask and decorated like a cake with a bull's-eye cornice and at the top a large hand with the index finger pointing to the sky. The same hand is also reproduced surrounded by baroque buckles on the frame of one of the windows.
A legend tells that the Roman people called this hand: "the hand of Cicero" ...........

RIONE XI : SANT'ANGELO
Even if in its first official delineation Sant'Angelo was one of the smallest "rioni", it was as long the most densely populated area of Rome and in the "rione" stood the largest fish market in the city.
For this reason the emblem of one of the versions of the "rione" coat of arms depicts an angel holding a scale that is nothing more than a reference to the price of fish that was set daily.
The Hebrew community of Rome, wich is the oldest in Europe, initially concentrated in Trastevere, it moved beyond the Tiber in the "rione" and from 1556 until 1870 it instituted a real "ghetto" and on the quay of the Tiber, the synagogue stands out with its beautiful Belle Epoque and its polygonal dome.

today…
Romans like to visit the "ghetto" for a variety of reasons, including restaurants and pastries of Jewish tradition.
It is true that Sant'Angelo has lost over the years of its authenticity but it is still possible to find small treasures like haberdashery that will make you dream knitting or haute couture. We go there to stroll, to taste a concentrate of tranquility sheltered from the chaos of Largo Argentina.

RIONE XI : SANT'ANGELO

the "Bocca della Verità" (mouth of the truth) is a carved disc of 1.75 meters in diameter and weighs about 1,300 kilos, dates from the 1st century AD and represents a bearded male face whose eyes, nose and mouth are drilled and hollow.
The primary function of this plate remains uncertain today: fountain, mouth of impluvium (system of collection and storage of rainwater) or more likely manhole which, in ancient Rome, often represented the effigy of 'a river deity swallowing rainwater.

The name "Bocca della Verità" appeared in 1485 and sculpture has always been mentioned among Roman curiosities, being frequently reproduced in drawings and engravings.

In 1631 she was moved outside the porch of the nearby church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, where she is still exposed today.

This mask has an old and legendary reputation: put your hand in the mouth of the Bocca della Verità and if you do not tell the truth, she will eat your hand ...

THE CANON OF THE JANICULUM:
Walking around 12 o'clock on the Janiculum Hill (Gianicolo), you risk an unexpected experience.
At precisely noon, you will hear a cannon sound ...
It was from 1847 that Pope Pius IX introduced this ceremonial to overcome the lack of coordination of the clocks of the city.
Indeed, at that time the watches were not widespread and the inhabitants therefore counted on the bell of the churches to have a temporal landmark.
Pope Pius IX wished to set up a precise reference on which all the clocks could be adjusted and it was decided that a gun shot that could be heard throughout the city would be the solution.
This tradition began in the central courtyard of Castel Sant'Angelo before the canon was transferred in 1903 to Monte Mario. As the noise of the cannon was not heard throughout the city, it was moved one last time in 1904 to find its current position, on the hill of Janiculum
Nowadays, when the weather is calm, especially on Sundays, when the city is less noisy, you can hear the sound of cannon sounding in the city center. Of course, it is much more impressive to be on the Janiculum where many tourists, inhabitants, families and children come to listen to it.
If you are in Rome and you hear a gunshot, you will no longer be surprised by watching your watch find that it is noon.

RIONE IX: PIGNA
Pigna is the ninth "rione" of Rome, it is not extended but it is dense, cramped, the streets are tortuous, the ruins are importantand, and the travertine and stone buildings dating from the 15th and 17th century.
The word "Pigna" originates from the discovery near the current via del Gesù of a bronze pine cone exposed today in the courtyard of the Vatican Museums.

RIONE IX: PIGNA

THE TREVI FOUNTAIN LEGEND
The Trevi Fountain (fontana di Trevi) is the largest and probably the most famous fountain in Rome thanks to Fellini's film "La Dolce Vita", which anchored it in the collective imagination.
The legend, which has become customary, is that the back turned to the fountain, a coin is thrown with the right arm and above the left shoulder before leaving the Eternal City, the one making this gesture being sure to return to Rome to find this piece.

THE TREVI FOUNTAIN LEGEND:

RIONE VII REGOLA:
The rione "Regola" is part of this great area devolved during antiquity to military exercises and called the "Field of Mars" in reference to the God of War. The "Campo de 'Fiori" square, that straddles the 6th Rione (Parione) and the 7th that we are here talking about, today is one of the few squares in Rome that is constantly on the move.
It wakes up for the fruit and vegetable market that lasts until 14h. The cafe terraces fill up and empty depending on the sunshine.

RIONE VI: PARIONE
The sixth rione of Rome is called Parione. It is a deformation of the Latin word "parietes" which means « wall » and refers to a remnant of the Domitian stadium that was on the site of the Navona Square. The latter and Campo de 'Fiori are today the most characteristic places in the historic center of Rome.

It is common to use superlatives to talk about St. Peter's Basilica. It is unquestionably the most grandiose, the most spectacular church in Christendom. It is also the second largest church in the world in terms of area with a total of over 15,000 square meters (the first being the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace Yamoussoukro).
