On Via delle Muratte by the fountain a palace shows the Latin inscription: Ne Gloriari libeat alienis bonis, translated literally, means "so that no one may boast of the merits of others".
It is the first verse of the fable: The superb Crow and the Peacock. Phaedrus says that a Crow, dressed in the feathers of a Peacock, when she was recognized was rejected both by the Peacocks and by the other Crows. But it also refers to some facts about the fountain…which ones…?

Coat of arms of the cardinal Giovanni Costanzo Caracciolo di Santobono (Naples 1715-Rome 1780), Chief Executive of the Church Administration in charge of the waters and acqueducts

Few know that the Procurator of the Waters of Rome when the Trevi fountain was built between 1732 and 1762 was Cardinal Giovanni Costanzo Caracciolo di Santobono (Naples 1715-Rome 1780), whose coat of arms with a rampant lion facing is sculpted while sliding down and being held by laurel shoots on the rock on the right. Therefore, on the Trevi fountain, there are only two coats of arms: at the top, that of Pope Clement XII, reigning from 1730 to 1740, when construction began; and that of Santobono.

The fountain takes its water from the Aqua Virgo aqueduct that originated from springs located in the Agro Lucullano, near the VIII mile of the Road Collatina, in the current location of Salone, and ended in Campo Marzio after a mainly underground route of over 20 kilometres. There is a legend linked to a girl who would have indicated to the soldiers of Agrippa, son-in-law of Augustus returning to Rome after the victorious battle of Actium against Marc Antony, the point where the source of water was. Virgo indeed in latin means “pure girl”.
There is a bas-relief on the fountain showing the event.
