About Stupas;

Stupa is a building in the shape of Pagoda in which Buddhist relics are enshrined. It is one of the three sacred monuments (object of worship) that the Buddhist worship when they are at a Temple. There are other names which are used for for Stupa (Sanskrit), Thupa in Pali language, Chetiya, Dagaba, Vehera and Saya in Sinhala language. The world’s first ever existing Buddhist Stupa is Sanchi stupa in India. The first historical Stupa in Sri Lanka, known as Tuparama was built by the king Dewanampiyatissa in 3rd century BC,which means the first stupa in Sri Lanka was built before 2400 years ago, but according to legends and chronicles, Thiriyaya, mahiyanganaya, Naghadepaya and kelaniya stupas were built before the 3rd century BC(in Buddha’s period). But there is no archeological evidence to prove it.

Stupa are unique creations in Buddhist architecture. According to archaeologist, Sri Lankan stupas were similar to Sanchi stupa in India.Between 3rd century BC to 01st century AD those stupas were consisted of Sand laid terrace,Stone laid terrace, Dome with Buddhist Relics chamber,Upa stone or Stone shaft and the Parasole.

More parts of the Stupa were added and developed from the 2nd century AD. Such as, Gate house, moon stone, guard stone, balustrade, frontispiece, cylindrical space for the deities,spire, pinnacle and the crest gem. This Pinnacle is made out of bronze or silver or gold plated. The top part of the square enclosure is 100% Sri Lankan creation.
