On Rosh Hashanah in 1553, during the tense years of the Counter-Reformation, this square became the site of a tragic event: the burning of the Talmud. This act marked the beginning of a long period of hardship for the Jewish community, known as the Ghetto Era (1555–1870).

Today, a plaque embedded in the square’s pavement commemorates this dark chapter of history. Installed in 2011 at the request of the Jewish Community of Rome, it stands as a reminder of the need to preserve memory and confront intolerance.
