Today we say addio to Astronaut Michael Collins, who was part of the historic Apollo 11.

Few know that the talented Collins was an American born in Rome, precisely on Via Tevere 16 in the Pinciano district on October 31st, 1930. His father was a military employee at the US embassy in Italy. The plaque above commemorates the astronaut and his enterprise citing, "In this house on 31 October 1930 was born Michael Collins, fearless astronaut of the Apollo 11 Space Mission, and first man on the Moon. Rome, proud mother of this son of hers, placed in perennial memory. S.P.Q.R., 16 October 1969." The plaque was placed on October 26, 1969, three months after landing on the moon.

A monument of many tales, the Mausoleum of Augustus, today, stands newly restored in central Rome. We, at Italy’s Best, were one of the lucky firsts to visit.

An outing today at the newly opened Mausoleum of Augustus. This 28 BC funeral monument was made for the emperor Augustus. We still can't believe it is open and restored after years of being closed to the public! In fact, works are still underway to discover more of this monument's secrets.

Piazza Caprera, in the Trieste district, is one of the most chic and high-end neighborhoods of Rome. The piazza's old 1950's fountain was given a makeover thanks to a daughter's donation of two statues made by her father, the 20th c. French artist, Jacques Zwobada, who lived in the area for a long time. Standing before us now is the new fountain made with dancing mechanical jets that light up at dusk by optical fibers. On parallel sides are the two donated gray basalt statues representing female figures (a dancer and a sleeper).
