4 Tuscan ghost towns you absolutely must visit

Embark on a journey off the beaten path and discover the mysterious charm of Tuscany’s forgotten villages. These abandoned ghost towns whisper stories of bygone eras and offer a unique glimpse into Italy’s rich history, perfect for the intrepid traveler.

Buriano
Located in Montecatini Val di Cecina (province of Pisa), Buriano lies silent today, yet its future promises transformation. Acquired by a Swiss group, plans are underway to turn this abandoned village into an exclusive resort with 120 beds. Imagine the revival of life in this magical corner!

Toiano
Nestled between Palaia and Volterra, Toiano is a medieval gem filled with enigmatic ruins. Explore the remnants of its castle and drawbridge, and admire its deconsecrated 11th-century church. Recognized by FAI as a “place dear to the heart,” Toiano exudes mystery and timeless allure.

Villa Saletta
Just a short drive from Toiano, Villa Saletta offers breathtaking views over the Valdera. Although it remains uninhabited most of the year, it springs to life in summer during the Festival of Popular Theater, where local Tuscan artists perform in this enchanting setting. (pic by )

Fabbriche di Careggine
Hidden beneath the waters of Lake Vagli in the province of Lucca, Fabbriche di Careggine is a truly unique ghost town. Abandoned in 1947, it occasionally resurfaces when the lake is drained, revealing ancient stone houses, a historic three-arched bridge, and the evocative Romanesque Church of San Teodoro—a hidden treasure preserved by nature.

As the leaves turn golden and the air grows crisp, Tuscany comes alive with the magic of autumn. In the surrounding woods, locals head out to forage for mushrooms, but the real stars of the season are wine and olive oil.

September marks the start of the grape harvest, when the famous Tuscan wine begins its journey, loved by wine enthusiasts around the world.

Between October and November, it's olive season! We harvest our olives to produce fresh, high-quality extra virgin olive oil. You can even find our new oil at our Azienda Bio Agricola Famiglia Bertoli , straight from our farm to your table.

Remembering the History

Tomorrow marks the anniversary of September 5, 1938, when King Vittorio Emanuele III signed the Racial Laws at San Rossore, near Pisa. These laws, promoted by Mussolini, suspended the civil rights of Jewish citizens in Italy, leading to their persecution, deportation, and often death. At the University of Pisa, 20 Jewish professors and 290 students were expelled, many of whom were later killed, like Ciro Ravenna, who died in Auschwitz.

Another somber event occurred on August 12, 1944, in Sant’Anna di Stazzema, a village in the province of Lucca. N**i soldiers and fascist collaborators surrounded the village, which had been declared a “white zone” for displaced civilians. Despite this designation, over 560 people, including many children, were massacred in just a few hours.

Visitors today can explore the Historical Museum of Sant’Anna di Stazzema, inaugurated in 1982 by President Sandro Pertini. The museum documents World War II, the Italian Resistance, and the atrocities of N**i-fascist violence. Multimedia exhibits and a documentation center provide a comprehensive historical narrative, while visitors can tour the actual sites of the massacre.

At the heart of this memorial is the Monumental Ossuary, where the victims rest in peace, overlooking the serene Versilia landscape—a symbol of remembrance and reflection on this dark chapter in history.
