The Grotte di Catullo in Sirmione are the remains of a Roman villa from the 1st century BC, overlooking Lake Garda. The term "grotte" refers to their partially buried state when rediscovered during the Renaissance. The name is linked to the poet Catullus, who celebrated Sirmione in his writings, though there is no evidence the villa was his. The complex included baths, gardens, and reception halls, but mysteries remain about who owned it and why it was abandoned. Today, it is an archaeological site with spectacular views and traces of Roman luxury.

Una leggenda locale racconta di Ebengardo, un cavaliere che abitava il Castello di Sirmione con la sua amata Arice. Durante una notte di tempesta, un viandante chiese ospitalità al castello, ma si invaghì di Arice e cercò di rapirla. Ebengardo, per difenderla, uccise l'intruso, ma arrivò troppo tardi per salvare la sua amata. Si dice che il fantasma di Ebengardo ancora vaghi per il castello alla ricerca della sua Arice perduta.

A local legend tells the story of Ebengardo, a knight who lived in the Castle of Sirmione with his beloved Arice. One stormy night, a traveler sought shelter at the castle but became infatuated with Arice and tried to abduct her. Ebengardo, in an attempt to defend her, killed the intruder, but arrived too late to save his beloved. It is said that the ghost of Ebengardo still roams the castle in search of his lost Arice.

🏰 The Scaliger Castle of Sirmione is not only a magnificent example of medieval architecture, but also a place rich in history and fascinating legends. One of the most intriguing curiosities concerns its fortified dock, the only one of its kind in Italy.
It is said that on full moon nights, the ghost of Ebengardo, an ancient knight, wanders around the castle walls. Legend has it that Ebengardo was deeply in love with Arice, but tragically, his beloved was killed by a passing guest. Destroyed by grief, the knight never found peace, and his spirit continues to wander in search of consolation.

Visiting the Scaliger Castle is not only a journey through history, but also an immersion in stories that make this place even more fascinating and mysterious.

From being a customs, to being a hotel ✨
From 1859 to 1866 this historic building was a customs of the Austrian Empire. It was later transformed into an aristocratic summer residence and during both World Wars it was taken by the military authorities. Only from 1948, it became a tavern and inn. Through various restorations, the building has become a modern Hotel & Restaurant. Completely renovated in 2017, Hotel Dogana stands out today for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, relaxing stays and fun trips between places of cultural interest, amusement parks and food and wine itineraries in the hinterland. This property is only 500 metres from the lake beach and 4 km from the picturesque old town of Sirmione.
