One not to miss when you are here and best combine with a visit to Alberobello
Polignano a Mare is a beautiful town in Puglia, Italy, located on the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the most important ancient settlements in Puglia and was later inhabited by successive invaders ranging from the Huns to the Normans.
The city is known for its white houses, narrow streets and small squares ending on one of the many panoramic balconies overlooking the sea. Here are some suggestions for things to see and do in Polignano a Mare:
Lama Monachile: Also called Cala Ponte, this bay is probably the main attraction to see in Polignano a Mare. It is famous because it is located between two high rock walls, on which the houses of the old town rest, and the blue and crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea. The beach is not sandy, but white pebbles, and in summer it is difficult to find a free place to put a towel.
The Old Town: The Old Town is very suggestive and picturesque: it is a perfect composition of white houses, which cling almost desperately to a rocky promontory kissed by the crystal clear waters of the sea. Many streets of the historic center are decorated with various religious images and flowers of all colors, but while walking through the streets you will also find dozens of lines of poems painted on every little corner, wall or door.
Polignano Caves: The Polignano Caves are one of Puglia's main tourist attractions. You can take a tour of the caves and admire the beautiful stalactites and stalagmites
Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II: This square is also called the Square of the Clock due to the presence of an old clock on the facade of one of these historic buildings. Many streets of the historic center are decorated with various religious images and flowers of all colors, but while walking through the streets you will also find dozens of lines of poems painted on every little corner, wall or door.
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta: This church is one of the most important religious buildings in Polignano a Mare. It is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture and has an impressive facade.
