IN TOSCANA IL PRIMO ALL OF ITALY’ OLD VINE CONFERENCE

I produttori presenti erano:
Feudi di San Gregorio, Vinchio Vaglio, Alta Mora-Cusumano, Villa Bogdano, San Leonardo, Fattoria Fibbiano, Tenuta Sette Ponti, Animatena, Malvirà, Tenuta dei Ciclopi, Castello di Albola, Marchesi Antinori, Cantina Roeno, GD Vajra, Benanti, Col d'Orcia, Azienda Agricola Gini Sandro e Claudio, I Custodi delle vigne dell'Etna, Zýmē, Morella, Aquila del Torre e Marchesi dei Gresy.

Old Vine Conference:

A hug thanks to Asa Johansson, CWW member and freelance writer for Swedish and international publications. Asa is a specialist in Italian wines and she was joined by three prominent Tuscan producers: Stefano Capurso, CEO of Dievole; Sofia Ruhne, owner of Terreno; and young winemakers and owners Maddalena Fucile and Matteo Vaccari from Cigliano di Sopra. They will share their insights on Tuscany's rising star and its journey back into the spotlight - addressing the renaissance in Tuscany. An additional big thanks to the three producers!

Traditionally, Trebbiano Toscano was relegated to simple white table wines or blended into Chianti and Vin Santo. However, many producers in Chianti Classico are now investing in the variety with the aim of crafting age-worthy quality wines. It still remains one of Italy's most widely planted grapes, ranking fifth with more than 20,000 hectares under vine.

Topics discussed in the session looked at the historical significance of Trebbiano in Tuscan viticulture and winemaking, the challenges and opportunities from vineyard to bottle, and the wine styles that producers are focusing on today.

A huge thank you form the Let's talk team and all of us attending the CWW seminar led by Roman Roth, winemaker and partner in Wölffer Estate who outlined the unique maritime influence from the Atlantic - Long Island Sound and Peconic Bay - on viticulture and winemaking on Long Island and to Colleen Hardy, founders of Living Roots winery who explained the formation of the inland Finger Lakes and their effect year-round on the wineries around them.

The closeness of water in both locations has some similar benefits, including spring frost protection and cooler summers, but our speakers will expand on these effects in their specific areas and on other aspects of wine production there. Examples will include the influence of visitors and summer residents on vineyards in a famous summer resort area (Long Island) and how the Finger Lakes provide winter insulation for vines.

A huge thanks to Richard Bampfield MW for his very insightful presentation for CWW - Let's talk about... on how sustainable is Burgundy? Insights into its current commercial and environmental position.

Richard, Master of Wine, CWW member and past chairman of the Association of Wine Educations, regularly visits Burgundy as part of his work with Maison Albert Bichot. A graduate in French from Cambridge University, he decided the wine trade was the best place to practise his French and pursue his nascent interest in wine. Following ten-year spells in retail and with Australian producer Brown Brothers he is now freelance and is best known for his work with Lidl.

Thank you Richard from all of us and the Let's Talk team at CWW!

PRESS RELEASE

Old Vine Registry Marks One Year Anniversary and
Announces Heritage Vine Hunt Contest

LONDON, ENGLAND (June 26, 2024) – To mark the first anniversary of its launch, the Old Vine Registry held a One-Year-On webinar for the wine trade, media and old-vine enthusiasts.

The hosts, Old Vine Registry Manager, Alder Yarrow, and co-founder of The Old Vine Conference, Sarah Abbott MW, announced a growth in old-vine listings of more than 1,000 new vineyards in one year; this increase of 49% brought the total number of vineyards catalogued to 3,279, across 36 countries.

“I’m really pleased with the progress that we’ve made so far,” said Yarrow. “More than 200 individuals from around the world have submitted vineyard data, as well as some larger regional organizations. That said, we’re still just scratching the surface of the old vine universe.”

To ensure the continued growth and impact of the Old Vine Registry, the team have conceived a campaign to cataogue 10,000 vineyards in the next three years, which was announced during the webinar.

“In order for The Old Vine Registry to keep growing and deepen its impact we need to keep it in the minds of the global wine community. That’s why we have launched the Heritage Vine Hunt Contest which aims to incentivise individuals to help us log, promote and protect more old vineyards” said Sarah Abbott MW.

Over the next three years, prizes will be awarded yearly to the individuals who contribute the newest vineyard entries to the Registry. Prizes have been donated by wine industry leaders including Wine Scholar Guild, JancisRobinson.com, The Old Vine Conference, World of Fine Wine magazine, Académie du Vin Library and Vinous. Like Wikipedia, the Registry depends on the submission of vineyard data by interested parties who own or can search out vineyard data.

After three years, the individual who has contributed the newest vineyards will receive the Grand Prize, which includes a travel bursary to attend an Old Vine Conference field trip, which are held around the world. Covering airfare, hotel, meals, and registration, this bursary has a value of more than US $2,000.

“We hope these prizes will incentivize some people to do a bit of research and contribute more vineyards,” said Yarrow. “It’s not that hard to dig up information on old vineyards, it just takes a little time and effort, and now with the contest we can reward some of that effort with great prizes and, of course, an immersive and educational trip to learn more about the significance of the world’s viticultural heritage.”

Contest winners will be announced yearly on the anniversary of the Registry’s launch. More details on the Heritage Vine Hunt contest can be found at: https://oldvineregistry.org/contest
