Chiesa di Santa Maria della Consolazione ✨

Just a short, scenic walk from Nido di Gufi, our cozy luxury retreat, you’ll encounter the breathtaking Chiesa di Santa Maria della Consolazione—one of Umbria’s finest Renaissance treasures.

Built between 1508 and 1607, its striking Greek cross layout, graceful dome, and intricate design make it a must-see in Todi. The church stands as a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, with contributions from renowned architects like Bramante, Peruzzi, and Vignola.

Steeped in local lore, it’s said the church was built after a miraculous event: a blind worker, while clearing brush, wiped his eyes with a cloth from a roadside shrine of the Virgin Mary—and regained his sight. The people, believing it to be a divine miracle, decided to build this beautiful church in gratitude.

THE ITALIAN SHUTTER…

Shutters have always invoked such a romantic notion in my mind- Maybe it’s all the movies of women pushing them open to the morning daylight, leaning out to smile and announce “Buongiorno”!

Trust me, I have these fantasy moments played out over the last year while in Todi.

But as living in Umbria for the last year has proven, shutters are an integral part of the Italian lifestyle.

Not just decoration. Italians use them for security, airflow, protection from the punishing heat, lighting within the Palazzo and noise control. It’s a delicate dance throughout the day of how, when, which degree/angle and open or closed. It’s a true relationship to house, owner and life experience.

This has just deepened my passion for them.
And today .todi we received our new olive shutters.

We are in love and can’t wait to throw them open, lean out and welcome you to Nido di Gufi during your stay with us.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH UMBRIAN LIGHT…

The things I love about living in Umbria…are many. Truely, she’s an unfolding delight.

But one of my absolute joys, and biggest surprises, is the “light”- Whether it’s the sunrise, sunset, light though the misty mornings or the hot summer sun deepening the ochre of a building… it’s breathtaking. My artist heart has completely been ignited here.

A photo will never fully capture how stunning the light and colours are…. You’ll have to come and see for yourselves.

THE TODI EAGLE LEGEND

Walking the ancient laneways, and Piazza’s, of Todi you will discover Eagle images everywhere.

The legend is told that on a sunny day members of a local tribe while picnicking on the banks of the Tiber river, a mischievous eagle took their tablecloth away, dropping it on top of the hill behind.

The sign was welcomed as a message from God, the town was built there and the eagle became the emblem of the town, reproduced in numerous effigies.

Come and discover the Eagles for yourself…I’m still counting.

Nido di Gufi has a strong, wonderful and VERY worn front door.
Since the 15th century, it has served as a welcome to its owners and guests alike.

Over the next months, the Front Door and Palazzo will be fully restored to her former glory (maybe even better) and I know the Palazzo will look forward to welcoming you though her front door once again.

Rome, Santa Prassede and a wonderful discovery!

Our Palazzo, Nido di Gufi, in the town of Todi is located on a main street called Via Santa Prassede.

The meaning of the name “Santa Prassede” has always been an interest to me, and asking around no one could shed any light…

Until our recent trip to Rome, while on tour of Basilica Papale of Santa Maria Maggiore, we discovered the meaning!

It turns out that “Santa Prassede” means/or is the name given to the ‘legs’ of the manger that held baby Jesus. I love that.

Nido di Gufi is on a street that has the energy of support and reverence. We hope that as you stroll down Via Santa Prassede to Nido di Gufi you will feel held and lead to your home away from home… whether it is for the weekend or longer.
