Sardinia - Capo Caccia: The protected area of Capo Caccia & Piana Island falls within the territory of Alghero and includes Porto Conte bay and the stretch from Punta Giglio to
Capo Caccia today remains a priceless natural heritage, embellished by the fossil-rich limestone and rare plants growing on the cliffs with incredible lower hanging caves such as Le Prigionette.
The restricted area of Grotta Verde can be visited on a guided tour and here you will find traces from seven thousand years ago, perhaps intended for the dead or as grave goods, including human fossils, ceramic items and graffiti.
For those fans of archaeology, which a few of our guests were, they visited the the Nuraghic complexes of Palmavera and Sant'Imbenia and the Roman remains: Villa di sant’Imbenia and the bridge over the Calich.

Giuni Russo wrote a song that went like this:

"Voglio andare ad Alghero - I want to go to Alghero
In compagnia di uno straniero - in company of a stranger
Su spiagge assolate - On sunny beaches
Mi parli in silenzio - Talk to me in silence
Con languide occhiate - With languid glance
Voglio andare ad Alghero - I want to go to Alghero
In compagnia di uno straniero - In company of a stranger
Le corse sfrenate - The wild races
Su moto cromate - On chromed motorbikes
Di sera l'estate" - On summer evenings"

Corsica: our final few days on the island in the medieval town of Bonifacio. A bit of riding and a bit of sailing, the group enjoyed the fine weather before taking the ferry across to Sardinia.
Ancient Bonifacio
It is known Corsica was inhabited as long ago as 6,750BC, thanks to the skeleton of a young woman, known as ‘Dame de Bonifacio’, found in a cave near the village of Capello just north of Bonifacio.
In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus and his men landed on the shores of a race of powerful giants, the Laestrygonians. When some of his men are eaten by the king and queen, Odysseus and his remaining men try to flee the harbour that is enclosed on all sides by a ring of high cliffs with just a narrow channel as an escape route. The giants pelt the boats with huge stones and only Odysseus’s ship escapes. Some believe that this is referring to Bonifacio and it is easy to imagine those giants raining down boulders from the cliff tops.

Corisca: heading inland from the coast today, we challenge the Col de Bavella departing from sea level and arriving at 1216m asl. Over 40km of climbing with spectacular views of the The Aiguilles de Bavella which are the rocky spikes of red granite you can see in the photos. The highest points of the Bavella massif stand a little to the north of the Needles with both Punta di u Furnellu (Punta llu Furneddu) and Punta Muvrareccia (A Mufrareccia) at 1899m. The massif is overshadowed by the highest peak in the region, Monte Incudine (2134 m). It extends from the forest of Tova and the town of Solaro to the 1381m Monte Calva to the south, the edges of the Massif de l'Ospedale, and almost to Conca and the sea in the east. It also acts as the basin for the river Solenzara, the traditional boundary between Corsica's northern and southern sections.

Corsica: another sunny day in Ajaccio we head out to Le Tour de la Parata. That Genoese tower was built in the 1500's when Corsica was part of the Republic of Genoa. Genoa traded Corsica to France in 1768 in order to pay off a debt, and the French put down the ensuing Corsican revolt and declared it part of France in 1769. Many Corsicans have not forgotten.

Corsica: photo and social backlog, in our last post we enjoyed the beauty of Corte and its surrounds before heading to the spectacular coastline. We descend into the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was born here in Ajaccio in 1769, the same year as the Battle of Ponte Novu. The Buonaparte family at the time had a huge four-story home in town (now a museum known as Maison Bonaparte) and a rarely used country home in the hills north of the city (now site of the Arboretum des Milelli). The father of the family, attorney Carlo di Buonaparte, was secretary to Pasquale Paoli during the Corsican Republic.

In the 18th century, the Marquis of Pombal introduced a pioneering vineyard classification system based on wine quality, influencing land value and ensuring the Porto wine’s reputation for excellence.
The 19th and 20th centuries were periods of great challenges but also modernization. The phylloxera plague devastated vineyards across Europe, and the Douro was no exception. The response included restructuring vineyards with resistant rootstocks, safeguarding viticulture continuity. Simultaneously, technological innovations in winemaking and vineyard management contributed to raising the Douro wines’ quality standards.

The Alto Douro Wine Region’s classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 acknowledged the region’s exceptional universal value.

This status celebrates the extraordinary cultural landscape shaped by human activity and highlights the importance of preserving the winemaking heritage. Since then, international interest in the region has grown, with a significant increase in tourism and investment in wineries.
