🇬🇧 This picture was taken 2 years ago. I was guiding a group of students through the castle of Duino that faces the Adriatic sea. I wrote a story about it yesterday.
I miss my work so much and loved the fact that one day I was guiding a group of children, then teenagers and then retired people in one week. The mixture and difference of kind people and various languages you speak makes it so much fun and rewarding.

Also this year there will be no school-trips but i do hope they come back because besides guiding and showing the beauty of this region I also loved the fact that kids called me ”teacher” now and then and even said ” you make it sound so much fun to study history”! Best compliment ever. 😀

Oggi vi parlo di Cividale del Friuli ✅🕍📍

Fondatore di Cividale fu Giulio Cesare che creò questa colonia militare dando il nome Forum Julii. Nel 568 entrano in Italia i Longobardi che ne fanno il primo Ducato in Italia con il Duca Gisulfo, nipote del Re Alboino. L’ottavo secolo sarà uno di grande splendore per la città ducale. Il patriarca di Aquileia decide di trasferirci la sede e ancora oggi possiamo ammirare delle testimonianze culturali di quei anni come il , l’altare di Ratchis e il fonte battesimale di Callisto. Grazie a queste testimonianza, Cividale è entrata sulla lista del Patrimonio Mondiale di Unesco. I Longobardi furano sottomessi dal Re Carlo Magno che cambia il nome in Civitas Austriea e Forum Julii si trasforma in Friuli!
La città di circa 10.000 abitanti viene tagliata in due dal bellissimo fiume Natisone che sorprende per i suoi colori turchesi. Nasce in Slovenia e finisce nell’Isonzo, il fiume della Patria. A pochi chilometri da Cividale si trova Slovenia e dalla sponda sulla terrazza del belvedere vediamo il monte Nero dove dietro si trova il paese Caporetto, diventata famosa per la rotta di Caporetto. Migliaia di soldati nemici entrano a Cividale e per fermarli, l’esercito italiano fa saltare in area il ponte del Diavolo che 400 anni prima era stato costruito con tanta fatica chiedendo addirittura una mano al Diavolo appunto!
Fine prima guerra gli Austriaci ricostruiranno il ponte che ancora oggi è una delle maggiori attrazioni turistiche!

Spring has come and I enjoy the flowers in my garden. We’re still 🔴in my region so I’m not allowed to leave my village for at least another two weeks. Fortunately I have a nice garden to enjoy and two dogs to walk with. How are you hanging in there? 🌸

Discover Fagagna.

Fantastic view from the hill of Fagagna with the snowy mountain peaks in the background. Here once stood a castle already mentioned in 983 in a capitular of Emperor Otto II, who attributed the possession to the patriarch of Aquileia. It has been a direct patriarchal domain until the Venetian occupation n 1420.

The castle, involved due to its strategic importance in many of the conflicts that marked the history of Friuli in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, was already in ruins in the sixteenth century. Only parts of the castle remain today of which one of the towers and the rebuilt S. Michele church. My favorite place close to home to enjoy the great view and stunning sunsets.

Explore the Giulie Alps

Today was the last day of being yellow in Friuli Venezia Giulia. This means that we could go out of our village and provence borders (but not the region) for hiking, snowshoewallking. From tomorrow we become orange again and you’re not allowed to leave your village unless for work, necessities. So I decided to make a nice hike in Val Resia in the Giulia pre-Alps area about a one hour drive from my house. Most likely I have to wait until after Eastern to see my beloved mountains again. Crossing my fingers for better times. Stay healthy and safe out there!

The magazine "Dove" which means ”Where” in English, has written an article about the 15 most beautiful, historical and beloved streets in Italy. Naturally, the gorgeous "Via Mercato Vecchio" in Udine and the ”Via Rossini” with the Canal Grande in Trieste, could not be missed. Both cities are located in the quite unknown, but beautiful Italian region Friuli Venezia Giulia where I work as a guide.

Sunset time in Udine.

Today I finally had the opportunity to make a picture during sunset time from the hill in the center of Udine. On this hill stands the castle of Udine that was built in the sixteenth century. The old medieval castle was destroyed during the earthquake of 1511 and in its place this ”palazzo rinascimentale” was built. Once the residence of the Venetians lieutenants and seat of one of the oldest parliaments of Europe. The castle has been recently restored. You can also see the oldest church of Udine with the bell tower with on top the archangel Gabriel and the old medieval water well. From here you have a great view over the Alps.

🇬🇧 Discover the Altopiano Montasio
There are many places in Friuli Venezia Giulia where you can make a nice winter hike with or without your snowshoes, now that our beautiful Alps are covered with a nice layer of snow. Yesterday I went to Altopiano Montasio which you can reach parking your car in Sella Nevea.
The walk is easy and you follow the Nr. Cai 623 which takes you to the High Plains of Montasio from where you have a beautiful view and can admire the following peaks: Jof di Montasio, Modeon del Buinz, Canin, Robon al Sart. The height difference of the hike is about 500 meters and in total reaching the mountain hut / restaurant and going back to the car we walked for 10 k.

Sono tanti i luoghi del Friuli Venezia Giulia dove poter fare una bella escursione invernale con o senza le ciaspole, ora che le nostre bellissime Alpi sono ricoperte da un bel manto di neve. Ieri sono andato sull’Altopiano Montasio che potete raggiungere parcheggiando la vostra auto a Sella Nevea.
La camminata è facile e si segue il sentiero Cai 623 che porta all'Altopiano del Montasio da dove si ha un bellissimo panorama e si possono ammirare le seguenti vette: Jof di Montasio, Modeon del Buinz, Canin, Robon al Sart. Il dislivello dell'escursione è di circa 500 metri e in totale raggiungendo il rifugio / ristorante e risalendo in macchina abbiamo percorso 10 km.

🇮🇹 Il forte di Osoppo
punto strategico dai tempi antichi. Collina naturale da dove si poteva controlare la strada che portava verso il nord, oggi autostrada ma una volta antica strada romana verso il Nordicum. Il punto panoramico quota 310 m. ti regala una vista meravigliosa che spazia dalla città di Gemona e le montagne: il Brancot, il Cjampon, il Paluris e il Cuarnan fino alla pianura.
Salendo una passerella metallica si può ammirare ancora un bellissimo panorama verso il fiume Tagliamento, il monte di Ragogna e monte Prat. Qui si sono svolte le guerre in epoca Romana, Longobarda, Veneziana, Francese e Austriaca fino alla seconda guerra mondiale. Un punto importante per la storia e magnifica per la vista.

Strategic point since ancient times. Founded on a natural hill from where you could control the road that led to the north, today a highway but once an ancient Roman road towards the Nordicum. The viewpoint at 310m high. gives you a wonderful view that sweeps from the city of Gemona and the mountains: the Brancot, the Cjampon, the Paluris and the Cuarnan up to the plain.
Going up a metal walkway you can still admire a beautiful view towards the Tagliamento river, Mount Ragogna and Mount Prat. Here wars took place in the Roman, Lombard, Venetian, French and Austrian periods up to the Second World War. An important historical place that offers a magnificent view.

Longing for sunny days? I don’t know how the weather is where you live, but here it has been raining for days. Therefore I’ve been watching some pics from last summer. Here I’m standing on the Rilke Path facing the Adriatic sea. This path is absolutely fantastic. It’s named after the famous writer Rainer Rilke who was invited to stay for a couple of months in the castle of Duino. In the early 20th century famous people from the arts and literary world were often invited here. Rilke was so impressed by the beautiful scenery that surrounds this castle that he used this inspiration for his masterpiece ”The Duino Eligies”. The Rilke Path (sentiero Rilke), is an exquisitely beautiful trail of 2 km. which runs right along the coastline . While walking over it you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea and enjoy the diverse flora and fauna that grows on the rocky Karst landscape made of limestone.

🇬🇧 GORIZIA WILL BE THE EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE IN 2025 TOGETHER WITH ITS SLOVENIAN NEIGHBOUR NOVA GORICA!!

The eventful past of the capital of the second smallest province of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. is named Gorizia and is on the border of Slovenia. You can stand with one foot in Italy and the other in Slovenia! The county of Gorizia was once a territory where the powerful Austrian counts ruled and after 1500 the Habsburg house. This Mitteleuropean influence can still be seen in the architectural style but also in its gastronomy. To visit: the castle, the Piazza della Vittoria with the Jesuit church, the various villas in the historic center and of course the Cathedral where there is the cenotaph of the last Count, Leonardo who left the city to the Habsburg house in 1500. And of course the Piazza transalpina where you can stay in Slovenia and Italy in the same moment 😀

🇮🇹Per parlo ogni settimana di qualche chicca che ha Friuli Venezia Giulia da offrire con la rubrica . Ultima volta parlavo del castello di Udine e il palazzo dei Luogotenenti. Nelle altre puntate ho parlato delle due città Unesco; la città stellare Palmanova, sulla lista del Patrimonio Mondiale dal 2017 per le sue opere di difesa militari veneziani e Aquileia dal 1998 per il splendido pavimento musivo dentro la basilica paleocristiana che risale al 320 d.C. 🇮🇹Amo la montagna, amo stare al contatto con la natura, amo la neve e amo camminare. Il destino vuole che sono finita a vivere la mia vita nella bellissima Friuli Venezia Giulia. Non avrei potuto scegliere un posto migliore. Così tante bellezze in poco più di 7000 km quadrati. Per un mese vivrò dei ricordi di queste ultime uscite, prima di poter di nuovo vedere e toccare le “mie” amate montagne da vicino. 🇺🇸 I love the mountains, I love being in contact with nature, I love snow and I love walking. Destiny made me ending up living my life in the beautiful Italian region Friuli Venezia Giulia. I couldn't have picked a better place. So many beautiful sceneries in just 7000 square km. For a month, due to new lockdown, I will have to live with the memories of these last snow hikes, before I can see and touch "my" beloved mountains again.

Explore Udine with me

How many beautiful things can be seen on the hill of Udine. The Renaissance castle has returned to its former glory after a full year restoration. The Lippomano loggia named after the lieutenant who had it built. The church of Santa Maria in Castello, the oldest church in the city. The view of the hill is fantastic and you can see the snow capped alps from here above. Udine is beautiful and really worth a visit. Come and see it for yourself as soon as you can. I would be happy to show you around!

Discover Piancavallo

Piancavallo is a mountain in in the provence of Pordenone of about 1300 km. high. After the heavy snowfall of the last weeks it was turned into a fairly tail landscape from where you can see the plains and even the Adriatic sea! it was so beautiful and i really enjoyed my snowshoes hike! Did you know that it was the first Italian ski resort to be equipped with an artificial snow system. From 1979 to the beginning of the nineties it hosted various women's alpine skiing World Cup competitions.
