The portrait of Madonna del Ponte making its way back to the sanctuary two years later due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Madonna del Ponte (literally translated as Our Lady of the Bridge) takes place during the midweek following Easter, that is from Thursday to Saturday evening with a firework display over its sanctuary. During the annual celebration, thousands of devotees go on a pilgrimage to the sanctuary with their torches lit, while saying prayers and reciting the Holy Rosary.
On the day of the feast (Sunday following Easter) at midday, the portrait is put on the traditional "vara" and taken to the Church of Maria Santissima Annunziata located in the main square of the Town of Partinico. As the procession arrives in the evening, the local civil authorities, clergy, band and citizens take over and continue the religious procession round the streets of the town. At about midnight the procession finally arrives at the aforementioned church, where the portrait will remain till mid November so that the devotees of the neighbouring towns can visit the church and pray the Holy Virgin. It is believed that Madonna del Ponte performs miracles and saves lives, mainly those of people who have been involved in both car and motorcycle accidents. As a matter of fact, there is a specific area inside the sanctuary where survivors have actually donated their broken motorcycle helmets, damaged vehicle parts, old prosthetic implants so as to witness their miracles. There are also several paintings of agricultural accidents which survivors have had painted by local artists so that visitors can learn more about Madonna del Ponte's great miracles.
Today the portrait makes its way back to the small sanctuary located in a valley between the towns of Balestrate and Trappeto. The sanctuary can be easily reached by getting off the Palermo - Mazara del Vallo motorway at the Balestrate exit.

Have you ever had a homemade Sicilian arancina?
Ours are simply delicious!
These fried rice balls are usually filled either with ragù or with ham and mozzarella cheese.
In the Catania area "arancine" have a conical shape inspired by the Etna volcano.
Make sure get enough of them during you next trip to Sicily.
