Another fabulous work by Sandro Botticelli (Alessandro Filipepi, 1445-1510) has arrived in Naples and from 30 November to 31 January 2024 will be hosted at the Complesso Monumentale di Donnaregina.
The famous Museo Diocesano hosts the Adoration of the Magi, one of Botticelli's most important works from the Uffizi in Florence.
The Adoration of the Magi was commissioned by Guasparre Del Lama and exhibited in the Church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence.
Botticelli represented the three Magi in the guise of some members of the Medici branch to which Guasparre was linked. We can identify Cosimo dei Medici, the Pater patriae, in a black suit, paying homage to the child, his two sons Piero il Gottoso in a red suit and Giovanni at his side, on the right, in a white and gold suit.
Also represented in the scene are Giuliano dei Medici on the left in the foreground and Lorenzo dei Medici among the figures on the right where Botticelli himself can also be recognised.
Finally, other figures represent those who had shown full loyalty to the powerful Medici family.
