🇬🇧🇺🇸 The granite outcrops of “lu Naracu” formed, since prehistory, a natural fortress, easily defendable building walls in granite between rock shelters.

Archaeological surveys confirmed that during Bronze Age (1800 - 900 BC) the highest part of the site was occupied by a nuraghe (naracu in local gallurese language ) of the corridor type, while the many rock shelters (Tafoni), occupying most of the area, were used both as dwellings and burial places.

The excavation campaign carried out in 1975 by the archaeological superintendence for the provinces of Sassari and Nuoro uncovered several shards of vessels belonging to bowls, pans, jars and also several spindle whorls and mills. Human bones were found inside one of the smaller rock shelters.

Oral tradition, artifacts and traces of walls, suggests that the prehistoric village, consisting of rock shelters and circular huts, used to be around the outcrop, where, later on, the medieval village of Villa di Castro, then Sant’Andria, today, Sant’Antonio di Gallura, developed.

🪧Egg shaped prehistoric tomb housed inside a Tafone.
📍Territory of Sant’Antonio di Gallura.

TAFONI (Rock shelters) are a landmark of the territory of Gallura.

In Paleolithic age tafoni were used as shelters, in later ages as homes, as storage rooms, as tombs.

Those destined to storage were usually mediums size Tafoni, with a very convenient northern exposure, which was indispensable for food preservation.

Tombs were put together in smaller, peripherals shelters, always integrated and then sealed with stone walls, perfectly cut and shaped.
Inside, remains of human skeletons, funerary objects, potteries were often found by archaeologists.
In the region of Gallura, bronze age nuragic people used to bury the dead in collective tombs, (better known as giants’ tombs) but also in tafoni.
This is a mystery to which, to this day, archaeologists couldn’t find a plausible answer.
No sign of power or social status was ever uncovered in any of the tombs of this two typologies. The only difference lies in the architecture of the graves, not in the rites or in the use.

The larger tafoni, with a southern exposure, were usually used as dwellings.
Dry stone walls were built, following the gait of the natural outcrop, meticulously closing and artistically creating living spaces that shaped the life of the people of this territory for thousands of years.
Stone walls were also built internally to divide the space in more rooms with such an accurate precision that still amazes archaeologists, scholars and visitors.
During the digging campaigns, pottery of every shape and form for everyday use were often uncovered, some still intact, some in the form of valuable shards. Food remains, tools in obsidian and flint, copper and bronze were also found.

During the golden age of Nuraghi, tafoni continued to be used as long as the round shaped structures with a wooden roof, (both were part of the village, which was build around the nuraghe) continuing in Iron Age, Semitic and Roman age till the middle ages and more.

We have knowledge of some families that lived inside Tafoni till the 60’s of the last century.

🚩Luckily it’s a very good season! Users, visitors, tourists keep coming, open to suggestions and to discover the territory of Sant’Antonio di Gallura, its traditions, local food and wine and the great way of Saint James, which confirm its position among people’s favorite hiking tracks of the region.

🚩So far, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium, Usa, France, Spain, Austria, French Switzerland, make up the main framework of the tourist attendance. A huge surprise it’s the return of German and British visitors, share of tourist markets which, in the last few years, were quickly declining and that, in 2024, started to peak up again.

🚩Local tourism is also on the rise, following the numerous Religious feasts and the many food and wine festivals.

Last but not least here are the 2024 niche markets up until mid July: Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary.

The lovely country church of Saint James, with its original light green entrance door, which has been recently repainted dark brown (!).

This is an exceptional place, with a very special atmosphere, where peace, meets tradition, religion and epic summer feasts.

Next feast is going to be this Saturday, July 27, starting at 08:00 pm. If you’re around Sant’Antonio di Gallura’s area, don’t miss it!

Ancient altar (?)

This very mysterious megalithic artifact in granite emerges from the ground, very well cut and shaped, with its supporting part finely worked. It faces a natural source of water, in a site full of tafoni of every size, already surveyed as living spaces, storage rooms and tombs.

The sensation is that most of the monument might lie underneath multiple layers of earth. The source of water that runs just in front, at 11:00 hours clockwise, is approximately 12/15 meters away and it’s definitely NOT a coincidence. It’s obviously functional to the main purpose of the site.
