A Day in Venice: Celebrating La Festa della Salute
Every year on November 21st, Venetians honor La Festa della Salute, a cherished tradition marking the end of a devastating plague that claimed about one-third of the city’s population in the 17th century.
To commemorate this historical event, families and friends come together to cross the Grand Canal on a temporary bridge specially installed for the occasion. Their destination is the magnificent Basilica della Salute in Dorsoduro.
Afterward, the celebration continues with a hearty plate of castradina, a traditional Venetian dish made from smoked and seasoned mutton, enjoyed in the company of loved ones.
