Palazzo Pesaro, in the St Mark’s district, was for many years home to the famous Spanish painter, inventor, and stage designer Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo (Granada 1871 – Venice 1949).
He chose to live in a historic Gothic home that soon became his atelier of photography, painting, stage, and textile design, frequented by Eleonora Duse, Isadora Duncan, Sara Bernhardt, and other famous artists.
The Fortuny Museum displays original furnishings, precious tapestries, a wide range of objects and materials purchased in Western and Eastern countries during his trips.
The museum also hosts the silk fabrics designed and printed by Mariano himself.

THINGS YOU CAN DO while sitting by a canal in Venice:
Enjoying the view
Painting
Reading a book, possibly about Venice
Drinking
Taking photos
Meditating
Chatting with your partner
Bird-watching
THINGS YOU SHOULDN'T DO:
Eating anything might attract voracious water-rats and aggressive fearless seagulls
Wearing beachwear (Venice isn't a beach...)
Dropping rubbish in or by the canal!
Jumping in the canal
Washing your feet in the not so clean waters

ANGELS - playing trumpets on top of Baroque churches, blessing private homes from Gothic portals, fallen from the top of belltowers, ornating elaborate wellheads...these winged, gentle beings are ubiquitous in Venice, a city traditionally founded on an Announciation Day of more than 15 centuries ago.

The attractive mosaic of Venice's brick walls can inspire your paintings and photos. Constantly struggling with the natural elements - salt water, tide, wind - they witness the passage of time and the uniqueness of Venice's history. Their warm hues play with the canal reflections. Their surface enshrines stones, windows, inscriptions. The colors of peeling plaster add emotion and personality. You'll never find two identical walls!

CAMPO SAN GIACOMETO - at the foot of the Rialto Bridge, surrounded by arcades, San Giacometo is right in the heart of Venice. Busy all day and part of the night as well, can be surreally beautiful when it's flooded. Every corner of this small campo talks about the economical history of Venice. It was defined by historians "the Wall Street of Europe in the Middle Ages".

SAN GIACOMO DELL'ORIO in the Sestiere di Santa Croce unveils its many centuries long history through a series of 'hints': a mysterious green marble column, a splendid Venetian-Byzantine wooden Crucifix, elaborate and elegant cylindrical Renaissance apses,All this bathed in light and quiet, with kids playing outside in the Campo.

“FOREIGNERS EVERYWHERE”
If for the Venice Art Biennale 2022 the ‘different’ was the female, or non-binary artist, the theme of the 2024 edition will be the ‘diverse’ in the sense of foreigner, with a focus on the artist who has traveled from South to North. For the first time in the history of the Venice Biennale the curator is a Latin American, while the attention is strongly on Africa and Asia.
From April 20th until November 24th Venice will be more international than ever thanks to FOREIGNERS EVERYWHERE. This is the theme chosen by Adriano Pedrosa, the Brazilian curator for this 60th edition.
Quoting Adriano Pedrosa’s words: «The backdrop for the work is a world rife with multiple crises concerning the movement and existence of people across countries, nations, territories, and borders, which reflect the perils and pitfalls of language, translation, and ethnicity, expressing differences and disparities conditioned by identity, nationality, race, gender, sexuality, wealth, and freedom. In this landscape, the phrase Foreigners Everywhere has (at least) a dual meaning. Wherever you go and wherever you are you will always encounter foreigners—they/we are everywhere. Secondly, that no matter where you find yourself, you are always, truly, and deep down inside, a foreigner».
The curator also states: «The Biennale Arte 2024 will focus on artists who are themselves foreigners, immigrants, expatriates, diasporic, émigrés, exiled, and refugees—especially those who have moved between the Global South and the Global North». There will be two major sections dedicated to new and old works, a Contemporary and a Historical nucleus. This second area will aim at investigating the history of modernism beyond Europe and North America.

DORSODURO one of the six 'sestieri', occupies the Southwestern part of Venice, wedged between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal.
The name Dorsoduro means “the hard backbone,” as the subsoil here is more solid than in other parts of town.
The sestiere is characterized by the presence of four major museums: the Accademia Galleries, the Venetian 18th century Museum (Ca’ Rezzonico), the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and the new ‘Punta della Dogana’, Francois Pinault’s private collection of modern art.
Besides the museums, another defining element of the neighborhood is the presence of many young people studying at either Ca’Foscari University, or the Fine Arts Academy. This lends freshness and a casual atmosphere to the entire area.
Add to this a sprinkle of famous artisans’ shops and much interesting architecture, like Ca’ Foscari and Ca’ Rezzonico, both splendid palaces on the Grand Canal, or the picturesque Gothic houses in Campo Santa Margherita, and you’ll see why this is one of the most desirable places to stay in Venice.
