Lo sappiamo, potremmo darti una delusione, ma non saremmo venipediani se non ti dicessimo le cose come stanno: è una recentissima leggenda urbana, ma non c’è traccia storica, ad oggi, che rappresenti qualsivoglia significato implicito o esplicito.
Anzi, una traccia storica ben evidente ce l’abbiamo: la sua forma — dalle incisioni del ‘500, passando per i dipinti degli artisti più celebri come Canaletto, fino ad arrivare ad oggi — è variate nel tempo, anche di molto.

We know, we might disappoint you, but we wouldn't be Venipedians if we didn't tell it like it is: it is a very recent urban legend, but there is no historical trace, to date, that represents any implicit or explicit meaning.
On the contrary, we do have a clear historical trace: its form - from 16th-century engravings, through the paintings of the most famous artists such as Canaletto, to the present day - has varied over time, even by a great deal.
