The seagulls found in the Venice lagoon belong to the Laurus family. Despite being a sea bird, it does not disdain to move on the shores of lakes or to find food in the hinterland.
They are sturdy birds with broad wings and beaks like beak. The wings are usually white, gray and black, while the young specimens carry a dark gray or brown livery. The seagull is an aggressive bird even if it is found in an environment that is not very suited to its nature such as Piazza San Marco.

The ability to easily find food in landfills and city streets, as well as the lack of fish in our sea, has led the seagulls to move en masse into the city environment, facilitated to obtain food by the lack of environmental education of citizens, who abandon bags at night of garbage that is broken and scattered on the street with disastrous effects for the hygiene and cleanliness of the city.

A bit of History

It was the end of the spring of 1630, a wave of the plague assaulted Venice, and until 1631 killed nearly a third of the population

Repeated displays of the sacrament, as well as prayers and processions to churches dedicated to San Rocco and Giustignani

when Palladio was asked to design the Redentore church in Giudecca Island the Venetian Senate on October decreed that a new church would be built. It was not to be dedicated to a mere "plague" or patron saint, but to the Virgin Mary, who for many reasons was thought to be a protector of the Republic.
