This is one of the rare buildings with frescoes school of Veronese, while the building itself, in the sestiere of Cannaregio facing the island of Murano is a complex brick structure started in 1534 by Sansovino and never completed. The ancient scuola was actually on the other side of the river, while the new building retains its charitable purpose, and was even used as a sports centre in the 20th century. Today the rooms host events and exhibitions.

Today is one of Itay’s most important museum complexes and still houses the reborn Confraternita-Scuola Grande di San Marco, one of the most prestigious Scuole Grande, still embellished by exquisite coffered ceilings, works by Palma il Giovanne, Domenico Tintoretto, Girolamo and Franceco da Santacroce and Padovanino. The scuola, which is open for guided visits, also houses an extraordinary collection dedicated to the History of Medicine with 18,000 volumes, including 300 dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, and surgical instruments. The vast complex opening onto Campo della Carita and the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro sestiere became an Academy of Fine Arts in the 19th century and later part of the Gallerie dell’Accademia. It began as a company of Battuti in San Leonardo , and in the mid 15th century was refurbished to become the church of Carita, in the distinctive Gothic style of Bartolomeo Bon. The building was extended but not completed by Palladio and half destroyed by a fire in the 18th century. Today, access to the gallery is by the entrance to the Scuola recognizable by two concentric circles intersected by a cross. A reliquary donated by Cardinal Bessarione in 1463 and a portrait of Gentile Bellini, depicted with the precious relic , a Virgin by Titan and a Madonna by Vivarini are included in the extensive collection of artworks from the 14th to the 18t

A dragon is threatening to destroy Venice

Long before Saint Mark became the patron saint of Venice, the protector of the city was Saint Theodore.

Legend has it that at that time there was a dragon who lived in the Lagoon.

He attempted to go into the city several times but never succeded. St. Theodore, known for being a famous dragon slayer, managed to keep the dragon away from the city with the help of his spear.

However, the Dragon is back now and wants to destroy Venice. Would you help me save the city?

The Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista

This scuola in the San Paolo sestiere is also secular, and is one of the few still functioning. Dating back to 1261 it is wealthy, thanks to the donation of a fragment of the True Cross. This relic provided inspiration for Victore Carpaccio and Giovanni Bellini , who left us his body of work on the story of the Cross, today in the Accademia. In the 19thcentury the building was rescued by a group of citizens who saved it from demolition and turned it into the headquarters of the Corporazione delle Arti Edificatorie. It is an architectural jewel entered via a septo which leads to the courtyard and then to the picturesque hall of the columns.

Caffè Florian - Also a sip of history

“To the Triumphant Venice” was its first name but soon Venetians began to call it “Florian’s” in honour of its founder, Floreano Francescani. Opened in 1720, it was the first coffee shop in Europe. Caffè Florian was the meeting place of the Venetian elite and many famous people frequented it. Caffè Florian was the only café, at the time, that allowed women to enter. The Caffè is still in business today and is a true historical monument of the city; sitting in one of its 18th century style rooms to enjoy a tasty coffee is a unique experience that should be done at least once in a lifetime.

Founded in the second half of the 13th century, when Venice was at the center of the world, the scuole were governed by a magistrate system that controlled the Mariegola (rules of the constitution of that particular instituion)
Some of the scuole were secular, others devotional. But all had a patron saint. They were called schools but there were no desks and no teachers. They were corporations of arts and trades; their purpose to protect and support their members. The grandi scuole of the aristocracy and the wealthy bourgeoisie were more like a halfway house between church and palazzo, with noble aims and aspiration to power.

Experience the Venetian Evening Aperitivo!

In Venice, the evening aperitivo is more than just a pre-dinner drink—it’s a cherished tradition that brings people together to unwind and socialize. 🍷✨

Venetians love to enjoy their aperitivo with a variety of white and red wines, but the true stars of the show are the three iconic spritzes:

🍹 Aperol Spritz: A refreshing mix of Aperol, Prosecco, and a splash of soda, garnished with an orange slice. Its vibrant orange hue and bittersweet taste make it a favorite.

🍹 Campari Spritz: For those who prefer a bolder flavor, the Campari Spritz combines Campari, Prosecco, and soda, topped with a slice of orange. Its deep red color and rich, bitter notes are truly captivating.

🍹 Select Spritz: A Venetian classic, the Select Spritz features Select, a local bitter, mixed with Prosecco and soda, and garnished with an olive. This unique blend offers a perfect balance of sweet and bitter flavors.

Palazzo Vernier dei Leoni is an unfinished palace in the Grand Canal, perfect home for Peggy Guggenheim who bought it in 1949 for her and her art collection.

Ever since1938 when she opened her Jeune gallery in London she was beginning a career which would affect the course of post war art. In 1941 in her native New York, she exhibited her collection of Cubist, abstract and Surrealist art, which was substantially that which we see in Venice today.

During her thirty-year Venetian life, Peggy continued to help artists and to buy works of art. Her ashes are placed in a corner of the garden of the palace where she customarily buried her beloved dogs.

During the Biennale Arte Biennale 2024, many buildings and former residences, that are normally closed open up as venues to host exhibitions. Today I visited Palazzo Rocca Contarini Corfu where I learnt about this exceptional artist: Jim Dine whose major exhibition of bronze sculptures, paintings and drawings was conceived specifically for the Biennale.

Never-before-exhibited paintings and sculptures will be arranged in dialogue with each other and with artworks spanning from the ‘80s through today. Curator Gerhard Steidl drew inspiration from Dine’s relentless odysseys between the United States and Europe, as well as his lifetime dedication to the concept of visual, cultural, and linguistic hybridization.

The Bellini is more than just a cocktail; it’s a piece of Venetian history. Created in 1948 by Giuseppe Cipriani at Harry’s Bar, this sparkling drink combines the freshness of prosecco with the sweetness of white peach puree. Its rosy hue, inspired by the paintings of the great artist Giovanni Bellini, makes it perfect for any occasion. A sip of Bellini is a journey through time, evoking the elegant post-war era and the splendor of La Dolce Vita. Try it and let yourself be enchanted by its timeless charm!poi devo andare a venezia

The Scala Contarini del Bovolo is a hidden gem in the heart of Venice, often overlooked by tourists. It’s a spiral staircase that winds up the tower-like facade of the historic Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo. The name “bovolo” means “spiral” in Venetian, which perfectly describes this architectural marvel.

History: The Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo was originally built as a “fontego” house in the late Gothic style around 1300. The Contarini family chose it as their residence due to its strategic location between Rialto (a commercial hub) and San Marco (the center of Venetian political power). In 1499, Pietro Contarini commissioned the beautiful spiral staircase to enhance the palace’s appearance.
Architecture: The impressive spiral staircase is made of 80 monolithic steps, winding counterclockwise inside a 26-meter-high cylindrical tower. The tower is built with Istrian stone and exposed bricks, adorned with arches and flanked by lodges connecting it to the adjacent building. At the top, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking view from the “Belvedere” terrace, overlooking the entire city and lagoon.
Don’t miss this unique jewel off the beaten tourist track!
