Meet Tweety and read her lovely story, thanks to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary near Hobart.

We have quite a unique new resident we would like to introduce you to! 💛

Meet "Tweety" the albino Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoo. Tweety came to Bonorong after being found beside a road as a juvenile. When Tweety first arrived she was very underweight and it was clear that she had been alone for some time. 😥

As a social species of bird, Tweety should have still been with her parents and their flock at her age. We suspect that, because of her albinism, she had been rejected by her flock. 💔

Too young to fend for herself, Tweety had clearly been struggling to survive and was very lucky that someone had found her when they did. 🚑

Our team have raised her over the last few months, working hard to step into the role of her parents. With the right care, the team have successfully helped Tweety grow into a healthy young cockatoo. 🥰

As a result of this process, Tweety has become humanised and bonded to her carers. It is unlikely she would ever be accepted by her kind if she were to return to the wild - a sad fate for a social species. For these reasons, Tweety will remain at Bonorong as a resident, where her safety is ensured. 🐥

Tweety will begin to spend time on display in the coming weeks as we introduce her to our existing resident birds who will hopefully provide the social interaction that she is looking for. If you spot her in the Sanctuary make sure to say hello! 😃

Shaking the feathers out my ears after 3 brilliant days promoting Tasmania at Rutland Water for www.globalbirdfair.org - as always with my wonderful friends from South Australia Tourism.

Wore my lucky Devil ears (yes I know I looked a wally but better that than shouting at people to come and check out my map of Tassie.)

Sadly their luck ran out on Sunday night 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿😥

Fab news about the OBP!

We have a new record for our Orange-bellied Parrot (OBP) breeding season! Seventy-four fledglings were produced from 33 nest-boxes, which is the highest number and proportion of nests recorded in the wild since monitoring began in 1993.

Eighteen captive-bred adult OBPs were released for breeding and 40 captive-bred juveniles were released in late summer ahead of migration. A total of 188 OBPs are estimated to have migrated from Melaleuca at the end of the breeding season.

Work is now underway to track OBPs during their migration over the non-breeding period.

Thank you to our recovery team staff, volunteers, researchers and to our mainland captive institutions we collaborate with for all our efforts in making this breeding season a success.

Check out NRE Tas’s website for more information on the 2023-24 breeding season results: https://nre.tas.gov.au/about-the-department/news/successful-breeding-season-for-orange-bellied-parrots

Introducing our little sponsored devil, Hermione! You can visit her on a Tasmanian Odyssey at Devils at Cradle wildlife sanctuary, Cradle Mountain

🌟INTRODUCING HERMIONE🌟

Hermione will be turning two in June of this year, ending her terrible teens. She is one of several female Tasmanian devils recommended to breed in 2024, and there has already been some interest in her from our male residents. She was hand raised by Keeper Sarah and has a bit of a spicy personality. She has been a frequent star of both the Joey Encounters and After Dark Feeding Tours over the last year.

Hermione has been sponsored and named by Susie of Tasmanian Odyssey, a long time supporter of Devils@Cradle and our conservation work.

A word from the sponsor:
"Hermione is such a pretty name for a much-maligned beautiful animal. Also after Hermione from Harry Potter, and after one of my favourite David Bowie songs, Letter to Hermione! I’m an obsessive life long David Bowie fan and he was a bit of a devil too 😊

Most of my Tasmanian guests come to Tasmania with high hopes of seeing a Tasmanian devil, and booking through me they do so in the knowledge that I only support Tasmanian owned and run businesses, and they are all very happy that their trip gives them the chance to give a little bit back to those who strive to help Tasmania’s wildlife and environment."

The Devils@Cradle team would like to send a huge thank you and congratulations to Susie and Tasmanian Odyssey for their ongoing support!

Thanks to Bonorong and its superb staff, thousands of lives are saved every year. Don’t miss a chance to visit this wonderful sanctuary with a private tour - including the Animal Hospital - on your Tasmanian Odyssey.

It's time for another Staff Spotlight! 🥰

Bonorong is lucky to have a team filled with such amazing, passionate individuals. We'd like to introduce you to one of them...

Meet Hannah, Head Veterinary Nurse at the Bonorong Wildlife Hospital! 👩‍⚕️

How long have you been a vet nurse?
I started my nursing career in a small animal practice in 2017. I was volunteering at Bonorongs wildlife hospital at the same time

What is your favourite animal to work with and why?
Any vagrant species! It’s always very excited to meet a species I’ve never worked with before, as it gives me a chance to grow my skills and knowledge (and obsess over something new)

What is the best part of your job?
One of my major career goals is to help improve the standard of care for Tasmanian wildlife, the BEST part of my job is knowing that we are achieving this. (I also love seeing sleepy faces wake from anaesthetic)

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a wildlife vet / vet nurse?
If you have true passion and persistence, you will find yourself where you need to be. Be insistent, be present and NEVER let an opportunity pass you by!
