Sark Island; a beginners guide.
The population of Sark is around 572 people, which rises to approximately 1000+ during the tourist season when hotels, guest houses, and campsites are open.
The island is known for its unique way of life, unspoiled by motor cars, and surrounded by high, scenic cliffs with tranquil bays and coves to explore at sea level.
Sark is a fascinating island within the Bailiwick of Guernsey, one of the United Kingdom’s Crown Dependencies, located in the Bay of St. Malo.
The island is approximately 3.5 miles long by 1.5 miles wide and consists of two distinct regions, Sark and Little Sark, joined by an isthmus called La Coupée, as well as a number of smaller associated islands, including Brecqhou.
The climate is similar to that of Devon, Cornwall, and Brittany, with frosts being infrequent and Sark frequently reporting the greatest annual sunshine hours for any place in the British Isles.
The island’s main industry is tourism, with several restaurants, pubs, and hotels, as well as guest houses, bed & breakfast and self-catering facilities and two campsites.
Electricity, water, sewage, gas, and heating oil are all handled differently on the island, with no mains water supply or sewer system, and each household being responsible for its own supply and handling of foul water.
The island’s currency is the Guernsey Pound, which is tied to the British Pound sterling and both are accepted throughout Sark, with the Euro also being accepted by a number of places on Sark at the current exchange rate.
