In Jamaica during the pandemic, many responded to movement restrictions and reduced income streams by turning to backyard farming for food security and stress relief. There is hope that this new trend of farming for personal consumption will help to displace the country's high food import bill.

🇯🇲 The 1865 Morant Bay Uprising changed the course of Jamaican history.

🪧 Preacher Paul Bogle led a protest in St. Thomas to challenge the continued mistreatment and the denial of the full spectrum of rights of Black Jamaicans after the end of slavery in 1834.

🔥 Fighting broke out between the protesters and a voluntary militia, defenders of the oppressive white Planter class.

🤯 This group comprised of Maroons, British soldiers, and other freedmen. They shot and killed seven protesters and in retaliation, the activists burned the courthouse and nearby buildings.

🩸Between October and November Governor Edward Eyre issued orders for the ex*****on, beating and unlawful imprisonment of over one thousand free men and women.

⚰️ At least 400 Black Jamaicans were killed and more than 1000 houses burned to the ground.

🙅🏾‍♀️The horrific actions of the government dramatically transformed Jamaica’s political system and reformed the island’s land regulations.

🇬🇧 The English Governor Edward John Eyre, was dismissed and the political constitution was transformed, and its two-hundred-year-old assembly was abolished.

⛓ Bogle was captured and hanged by the British authorities on 24 October 1865 in the Morant Bay Court.

🤯 This anger around a Black Disney mermaid is rooted in ignorance.

🌍 The global majority have always had river spirits or ocean Gods and Goddesses as part of their folklore.

🧜🏾‍♀️ Oshun is commonly called the river orisha, or goddess, in the Yoruba religion and is typically associated with water, purity, fertility, love, and sensuality.

🧜🏾‍♂️ Nyami Nyami, otherwise known as the Zambezi River God is one of the most important gods of the Tonga people. Nyami Nyami is a male protector and gives sustenance in difficult times.

🤷🏽‍♀️ I don't quite understand why the presumption exists that only western European culture has mermaids.

🇯🇲 In Jamaica, we have River mumma!

🧜🏿 She lives in deep rivers, way down in those places where the water is tranquil, still and achingly blue, in spots beneath the shade of cotton trees, rimmed with plumes and spears of palms and overhung with ferns and ropes and vines of plants.

It is there, they say, in those still places, way down at the bottom of the river she....

🎭 Louise “Miss Lou” Bennett-Coverley (1919-2006) was a Jamaican poet, folklorist, activist and entertainer – who empowered the country to take pride in its language and , bringing patois to the fore.

🥁 Angus “Drummie Zeb” Gaye, the lead vocalist and drummer has died aged 62.

💥 Aswad, the trio of Angus Gaye, Brinsley Forde and Tony Robinson, were the first reggae band in the UK signed to an international label, Island Records, in the 1970s.
