We're delighted to host Ustadha Iffet Rafeeq in Jamaica! Throughout the week, she will be teaching her course 'The Seasons WIthin' helping women understand and master their menstrual cycle, sensuality and s*xuality through an Islamic lens. We’ll visit Kingston Central Masjid mosque, pray in peace, remember Allah, and enjoy an exquisite eight-course farm-to-table meal at Stush in the Bush organic farm. You’ll also have the opportunity to take in Jamaica’s unspoiled nature and swim in breathtaking waterfalls, beaches, and lagoons. We’ll hike up the famous Blue Mountains, where we’ll visit one of the island’s oldest Rasta communities and dissolve all ignorant misconceptions about the island and its proud people.

Ahhhh! Our first UMRAH HOMECOMING retreat was not only sold out but it was a beautiful and successful retreat! Saudi Arabia is a beautiful country and it’s people are kind and diverse!

we enjoyed classes with , visited the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, star gazed in the dessert, spent time in Al Ula and Jeddah! Many of you are already asking for next year’s dates. We will be releasing them very soon.

there has been a lot of demand for another women only Retreat and as always we take everyone’s feedback seriously.

ZANZIBAR DREAMING! The majority of photos (found online or on Instagram ) of Zanzibar consist in many European tourists enjoying beautiful beaches.

After speaking to many Zanzibaris they expressed their concern over the fact that the presence of tourist is eroding their cultural landscape. One local in particular said they did not appreciate Europeans and Westerners dressing in bikinis in front of children on their way to the Madrassa (Quranic school).

They feel that many tourists express very little interest in Zanzibari culture, let alone show it respect.

The lack of modesty along with alcohol and s*x tourism are beginning to change this beautiful Muslim island.

We intend on sharing with your both culture and natural landscape, as they cannot be separated from one another. We understand that many tourists do not leave their resort upon arrival, we intend on doing things differently.

We’ll stay at beautiful resorts, however, everyday we’ve planned excursions and experiences that allow you to step out and acquaint yourself with the culture and its people.

We’ll visit Madrassas, mosques, the Old city of Stonetown and much more. Join us from May 14-23 inshallah.

This is what a day at the waterfalls in Jamaica looks like on our retreat! After a solid breakfast, we make our way to the falls for a water hike, we jump down the rabbit hole and a swim for a few hours.

After the falls, we head back to our hotel for lunch, downtime and relaxation, a dance class and preparation for our prom themed dinner at where we eat the most delicious foods!

Zanzibar has been on our mind and we’re hoping to host a retreat there next year inshAllah! Prior to selecting a retreat destination, we do extensive research; we speak to friends and locals in order to ensure we are respectful of the cultural and physical landscape. We want to support locally owned businesses and respect local traditions and customs.

Traveling is a gift that comes with many blessings, however one cannot deny the negative impacts of tourism. They affect the physical and moral landscape of the land. As we learn more about Zanzibar, we see that the growing impacts of tourism in Zanzibar have not been without problems. Many locals have criticized the erosion of their cultural and Islamic heritage, a product of careless tourism.

As we plan our next adventure, we ask for guidance and clear intentions.

Morning! Blessings! Salaam! My name is Wafa and I’m the founder of Burgundy Roots Retreats!

At 21, on a summer break from school, I travelled alone for the very first time. I taught English in Peru and stopped by Jamaica on my way back to Toronto. It was an amazing experience!

Five years later, I returned to Jamaica and a friend introduced me to members of the Muslim community there. I remember driving through St-Elizabeth, Jamaica’s countryside and bread-basket, and seeing a sign in front of a house. It read, ‘God is God and God Naah sleep.’ This was definitely my kind of place! There is an easy directness, humor and rich spirituality there that is uplifting and compelling.

Burgundy signals magnificence. It appeals to our inner regality, stirring us to reclaim our best selves. It's a path of enriching oneself while giving back to local communities.
