01/12/2019

The year is coming to a close and thank God, cause it was filled with a lot of challenges. But with those challenges have also come new opportunities.

Things won't be easy next year either, but I'm hoping they will be different. Change is something that I tend to look forward to, good or bad, because doing the same old sh*t isn't good for everyone.

I've started a new job at Ragamuffin Hostel and Coffee Bar.
I'm still doing body art on Saturdays and Sundays for now, but eventually that will end too. I'm not sure what that will mean in terms of this page yet, or Henna Threads as a concept, but I do know that when I started Henna Threads I set out to create something beautiful to honour my friend Rushay and all of you have made me feel as if I've accomplished that. Thank you for that.

At first, I only wanted to create something that was pleasing to the eye. But it grew beyond that. My models and followers, my henna family across the world who welcomed me into the culture of the art form, my supporters, all of you have made me aware that I've created something that has made people feel more body positive, more confident, and more willing to share their vulnerable side. Admittedly, I've also created a thirst-trap for some and I think there's beauty in that too, so long as those trapped by it are also exposed to the positive forces that have helped myself and others grow.

Thank you for supporting and enabling me to execute my will through my work and through all of you who enjoy it. You can continue to support my work by subscribing to my patreon for $1 dollar a month. Link in my bio.

I don't know what Henna Threads will transform into from here, but please share with me what you think of when you think of this 9 year journey. It could be a word a sentence or a paragraph. Share with me what this page means to you, if anything at all. And share this post with those who may miss it so that I can find out what they think.

Musical sample created by . Go give his page some love.

I've stopped doing henna and jagua full time, for those of you who don't already know. After many years, I've decided to do body art part time.

This decision has been years in the making and a lot of thought has gone into it. I'll go into detail about this in later posts, but I just wanted to say it and get it out there for those who have found it difficult to reach me recently.

For now, you can still book appointments on the weekends, but that may change in the coming months, so get it while you can!

I'll still be doing shoots every now and then and you can continue to support my work by signing up to my patreon for $1 a month. Link in bio

These days I use deionized water in my mixture, rather than lemon juice, but everything else is the same.

You guys have to watch out for fake henna. Even buying henna in a powder form can be risky, so you should only get yours from trusted suppliers. I've tagged a couple.

And for those of you who want natural henna, but don't want to go through the trouble of mixing it yourself, I sell my henna cones island wide. Whatsapp me to purchase or if you want more information. My number is in my bio

Hope y'all are having a good morning. I wanted to dispel a misconception of what people consider to be a tribal tattoo pattern. The first thing I'd like to point out is that the patterns associated with that term have a very specific look, but it's probably not the look that you would imagine upon first consideration. Often times persons group several different aesthetics together and call them tribal. It can be very confusing to your body artist and it's misrepresentative of the unique cultures that identify themselves through these markings.

When a Samoan man is about to have the markings on his body done, he doesn't think to himself, "I'm going to get my tribal tattoo now". That's a thought that, to a great degree, is considered by westerners.

While tribal designs that were developed in America (the patterns at the bottom of the image) are derived from these nobel cultures, the specific markings from these other peoples are not themselves "tribal". In some cases, the very reproduction of the sacred patterns of these cultures is considered disrespectful, if done on/by someone who is not of their culture.

Lastly, these are only a few examples of several different types of patterns from a variety of cultures, each of which are grouped as and misrepresented as tribal. Some of these include several other Polynesian cultures, Hawaiian culture, the Iban people of Borneo, the Ndebele people of Southern Africa, (that's not a typo), several other African cultures, Celtic culture, the Mayans, the Aztecs, etc... The list goes on and on.

Disclaimer : this is the opinion I've formed from observing the evolution of body art over the years and the terms associated with that evolution. If anyone is able to educate us further on this, please drop your knowledge in the comments below.

The henna stains above were inspired by the cultures that label them. None are an identical reproduction of any particular piece of body art.

The left side of the shoe from the "to whom much is given" giveaway.

This is the last picture I'll post for the giveaway. Good luck everyone!

What do you have to do to enter?
Nothing.
That's right. If you are following me on Instagram, then you have already been entered into the giveaway.

If you are gracious enough to share this post, however, you will be awarded 1 extra entry.

I'll pick the winner on the 20th of this month at 9am and announce the winner on the 21st of October at 6pm.
And the giveaway is open to all my followers from any country, just to clarify. I'll ship the prize to you.

I'll contact the winner on the morning of the 20th and if I don't get a response in 24 hours I will pick someone else.

These shoes are 27cm from heel to toe. That means they are a size 9 for men and size 10 for women, by US size standards.

If you win and these shoes are not your size, please give them to a friend or family member they'll be able to fit. You can even sell them using my name, if you prefer. Seriously.

This year has been a most challenging year for me, filled with 3 life changing events... When I say life changing, I mean it. As such, I'm grateful for what I have been given in this life and I'd like to give back.
I wanted to make it a true giveaway, which wasn't about me and how much I can benefit, but rather about how much I can show my appreciation for all I have. That's why I don't require you to do any promotional work for my benefit.

And for those of you who are curious, I do custom work like this for 120USD and upward, NOT including the shoe, of course.

NOTE: Only one side of each shoe has been customized and the patterns do not match, even though they have been evenly laid out.

I now announce the "to whom much is given" giveaway.

Yes! I'm giving away this hand-done, custom piece of footwear.

Nothing.

If you are gracious enough to share this post, however, you will be awarded 1 extra entry.

But, if you think about it, 1 extra entry out of 16k doesn't increase your chances much. You'd really just be doing me a favour if you shared the post. But favours are quite welcome!

I'll pick the winner on the 20th of this month at 9am and announce the winner on the 21st of October at 6pm.

This is henna mixed with jagua juice. Jagua juice is an ink derived from a tropical fruit.

Jagua is a known allergen, like nuts, fish, etc. Persons who are allergic to tropical fruit such as berries, kiwi and citrus fruit tend to be allergic to jagua.

Note: Jagua is NOT "black henna"

Natural henna produces a red dye. Henna ONLY stains red/brown. Only. And the stains are usually not as dark as the one in this image on this part of the body. However, on the hands and feet natural henna stains have the potential to be even darker than these.
If you see body art in ANY colour other than red/brown, it's definitely not henna.

There are, however, fake henna products out there that actually do stain in the same colour as natural henna and they are WAY more popular than natural henna and are harmful.

Don't be afraid to question your henna artists. "did you make this yourself?", "who is your supplier?", "what are the exact ingredients in your henna?" By the way, if you are told that the henna being put on you is from India or Pakistan, that DOES NOT mean it is natural henna. Those countries have a high demand for henna. As such, they are the largest exporters of fake henna.
