Cardinal Parolin in Jordan for the Consecration of the Church of the Baptism of Jesus

Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin as his papal legate for the consecration of the Church of the Baptism of Jesus, to be held on January 10, 2025. The announcement was made in a Vatican News Bulletin on January 2.

The church, located at the historical site of "Bethany beyond the Jordan" (Al-Maghtas), lies on the east bank of the Jordan River, near the Dead Sea. This UNESCO World Heritage Site includes Tell Al-Kharrar (Jabal Mar-Elias), traditionally believed to be the place from which the prophet Elijah ascended to heaven, and the churches of St. John the Baptist near the river, marking the place believed to be Jesus' baptism site.
