The oasis of the Azraq wetland in Jordan's eastern desert is only a fraction of its former size due to over pumping of the water for human use. But it is still a location of rich biodiversity, providing a natural habitat for migratory birds and other animals like water buffalo!
The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) works to conserve the species and encourages people to enjoy the wild habitats. Azraq Wetland Reserve is a "development station" which employs people from the local community, benefitting hundreds of families.

Art depicting the legend of St George slaying the dragon at the famous Orthodox Church bearing his name in Madaba, Jordan. Did you know there are many churches bearing the name St George also in Palestine? Palestinians revere the early Christian martyr as a local hero who opposed the persecution of his fellow Christians in the Holy Land. His mother was said to be from a town near Bethlehem. He is also called Al Khadr.

View from the High Place of Sacrifice in Petra.
One of the most scenic hikes in Petra leads up to the High Place of Sacrifice on Jabal al-Madhbah. Then you head east down to Wadi Farasa. Plan an hour or more for this to enjoy the impressive views of the mountains and the wide valley.
The main attractions of Jerash are of course the Roman era ruins. But did you know there are also remains from the Byzantine period here, including mosaics? This is at the remains of the Church of Isaiah dating from 558-559 CE. During the Umayyad period (661 - 750 AD) it was still in use by a Christian community, but was destroyed during the large earthquake of 749 AD.

Exploring local food is one of the best things about traveling and we're sure you will love tasting some delicious Arab foods! Mansaf is considered the national dish, so it is one of Jordan's must-eats! It features a flavor quite unique: the Jameed sauce which is made from fermented goat-milk yogurt.
You can try different kinds of Mansaf in downtown Amman at Jameeda Khanum restaurant. They offer traditional mansaf, northern, southern and mix mansaf along with other Jameed based dishes such as Basha Wa-‘Asakro (made from Kibbeh and minced meat stuffed dumplings in Jameed).

Wooden mallets pound the ice cream into a drum, making a rhythmic percussion song. Then stretched and pulled, thanks to the addition of sahlab, a flour made from orchid roots, and mastic, a tree resin that makes Arabic gum, giving it its particular consistency. Petra was the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom. It is ccessed via a narrow canyon called Al Siq and features tombs and temples carved into pink sandstone cliffs, earning its nickname, the "Rose City." This historical and archeological site in Southern Jordan lies on the slope of Jabal Al-Madbah in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of the Arabah valley that runs from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra is believed to have been settled as early as 9,000 BC
