PETRA ✨ SECRET BACK DOOR

📌 Save this post if you’re planning on visiting Petra!

The Visitor Center is where most tourists enter the lost city, after which a 1.2 km walk through the Siq (a gorge) leads to the famous Treasury, which is considered the starting point of exploring Petra. But did you know Petra has a secret back door? 🙌🏼

Here’s why I can 💯 recommend the back entrance and how to get there! 👇🏼

🥵 ONE-WAY trail instead of two-way:
In Petra, the main trail starts at the Treasury and goes all the way uphill (+ 900 steps) to the Monastery (pictured here and in my previous post), after which you have to take the same route back to the Treasury - Siq - Visitor Center. When you enter Petra through the back door, you only have to conquer the one-way trail from the Monastery downhill to the Treasury!

✨ Be the FIRST one at the Monastery:
If you enter Petra through the back door early in the morning, you’ll have the Monastery all to yourself as all the other tourists start at the Treasury 🙌🏼 + the view on this photo is your first glimpse of the Monastery and that moment is MAGICAL

🙋🏼‍♀️ HOW TO GET THERE:
Book a guide , who will then take you with a 4WD to the back door. Here your tickets will be checked and the guided hike to the Monastery begins! You’ll witness insane views along the way. It’s a challenging but very doable hike - and remember; you’ll only have to walk downhill from the Monastery!

📍 The Siq (Arabic: السيق‎, transliterated al-Sīq, transcribed as-Sīq,[a] literally 'the Shaft') is the main entrance to the ancient Nabatean city of Petra in southern Jordan. Also known as Siqit, it is a dim, narrow gorge (in some points no more than 3 metres (10 ft) wide) and winds its way approximately 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) and ends at Petra's most elaborate ruin, Al Khazneh (the Treasury). A wide valley outside leading to the Siq is known as the Bab as-Sīq (Gateway to the Siq).

🇯🇴 How many days to visit Petra?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tickets to Petra are sold as 1, 2, or 3 day passes. Making the decision on how many days to spend somewhere before you even see the place for yourself can be tough. We always worry that we won’t give a place the time it deserves but at the same time we don’t want to spend too long when we could also be visiting other amazing sites!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Petra is much more than the Treasury and Ad-Deir - it’s an entire town with many other beautiful attractions and hikes! By visiting for 1 day, you can get to the two main attractions, but you won’t have much time left for the smaller spots. 3 days will give you plenty of time to visit everywhere and return to your favorites. For us, 2 days was a good choice as we got to visit all the attractions, sit down for a meal, visit the Treasury a few times at different times of the day, and even go on a couple of hikes. Our days were packed, though, and we arrived early in the morning as the park opened!

📍Iraq al-Amir or Araq el-Amir (Arabic:عراق الأمير - literally, "Caves of the Prince"), is the name shared by a town and nearby caves, within the municipality of Amman in the Jordan Valley. Located about 15 km southwest of the town of Wadi as-Seer, it has a population of about 6000 people, mostly members of the Abbadi tribe. It is located on hills with high and medium altitude, in an area with many springs and famous for its olive trees and other forest trees. About 0.5 km south of the town stands the archaeological site known as Al-Iraq, dominated by a partially restored palace known locally as Qasr Al-Abd, literally "Palace of the Servant", perhaps in connection to the name etched in the nearby caves, believed to be the name of the owner of the ancient estate. There are many caves in the hills which were inhabited during the Copper Age.

📍Umm al-Jamal is an ancient Roman city located in Jordan, 86 km from the Jordanian capital Amman, near the city of Mafraq, close to the Syrian-Jordanian border in the far north of Jordan. Volcanic black.
The city was built on the edge of one of the valleys that descend from the Druze Mountain to the southwest, and this valley is a separating boundary between the Syrian heat that extends from Azraq in the south to the outskirts of Damascus and from Wadi Muqat in the east to Umm al-Jamal in the west with a depth of more than 200 km. This city was built on the edge of the valley. In order to secure water for it as a basic factor for stability, as there are dozens of ponds, water tanks and wells dug on the outskirts of the valley, some of which are still usable today.

📍In the northwestern corner of Jordan, in the hills above the Jordan Valley, are the ruins of the Decapolis city of Gadara, now called Umm Qais. The site is striking because of its juxtaposition of Roman ruins with an abandoned Ottoman-era village, as well as its tremendous vantage point, with views of three countries (Jordan, Syria, and Israel and the Palestinian Territories), encompassing the Golan Heights, Mt Hermon and the Sea of Galilee.
Today Umm Qais is at the forefront of community-tourism development in Jordan, and it's worth staying a night or two to enjoy an increasing array of options, from hiking and biking to beekeeping, foraging and cooking classes.

📍Near the Shobak Castle in the south of Jordan is where you'll find the smallest hotel in the world. The owner, Mohammed Al Malaheem, also known as "Abu Ali," has turned his rundown Volkswagen Beetle into a "hotel" that fits two people.
The cozy (to say the least) space is decorated with adorable throw pillows to make any guests stay comfy, and adorned with other deco that gives it charm and character.

It’s not enough to be in the right place at the right time, it’s also about seizing opportunity when it’s at your fingertips.
I don’t talk much about my private life on here outside of my travels but I am a full-time physician. And while I have missed flying around the world, I have been able to use this time to focus on my work and my research and make the most of this scenario. 📍The Umayyad Palace (Arabic: القصر الأموي‎) is a large palatial complex from the Umayyad period, located on the Citadel Hill (Jabal al-Qal'a) of Amman, Jordan. Built during the first half of the 8th century, it is now largely ruined, with a restored domed entrance chamber, known as the "kiosk" or "monumental gateway".
The Umayyad Palace gives visitors a glimpse into life during the Umayyad period in what is now Jordan. While largely restored, the palace is a popular photo spot, as both inside and out offer spectacular images.
The site itself is significant because its occupation dates back to the Neolithic age, although its importance declined after the Umayyad period. Today, the palace sees a steady stream of visitors who come for its archaeological significance and the panoramic views of Amman.

📍The Ten Bridges is an ancient arch bridge with ten arches, dating back to the Ottoman period in Jordan. It is located in the Qweismeh area in Wadi Al-Rimam, southeast of Amman. It was established by the Turks in 1908 during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, to pass through the Hejaz railway line that connected Damascus with Medina, passing through the Jordanian cities. The ten bridges were not significantly changed except for the paving of the road beneath them. Despite its name, “The Ten Bridges,” it is only one bridge; as for the indication of the number “Ten”, it is the number of the ten upper arches (arches) that decorate this stone bridge. Arches are considered a very accurate and regular architectural masterpiece, as engineering is evident in the construction of arches «arches» of two floors The first floor includes a pedestrian corridor and places for the drainage and flow of water channels, while the second floor is dedicated to the running of the train.
