We welcomed our new visitors. Time to set up the camp after a good hike and jeep tour in the desert. Coming up: fireside vigil, traditional songs and night under the stars...🙂

Many rocky outcrops, canyons and stunning vantage points can be explored on foot during during our hikes,

You may also find dark caverns, narrow gorges, impressive mountains, sweeping dunes, and refreshing springs.

During your visit you may also notify some petroglyphs, rock inscriptions and ruins left by several prehistoric civilizations.

Break time of our excursion with the group 🙂 :

It s time for the preparation of the “Arbood”. This is a circular, flat bread that the Bedouins eat with every meal during the day and you may try during your trip to the desert.

Traditionnally backed on an open fire while using the ash from the earth to cook bread.

The ingredients include flour, salt, and water mixed and kneaded together into a dough. Using a stick, the bread is covered in the hot ash from the fire to cook the bread.

Did you know that Wadi Rum has an abundance of plants?

About 25 species found in Wadi Rum are considered to have medicinal properties.

It consists mainly of shrubs and bushes, used for firewood by the local bedouin, but also herbs as well as various types of desert flowers. Along water springs, you may found some figs, olives, mint plants.

The commonly plants used for medicinal properties are :

-Ather: this shrub is used to treat stomach aches and digestive problems like diarrhea. We boil water and add some twigs. After infusion, we drink it as a tea.

-Ja’deh - Felty Germander: this shrub/herb is used to treat a cold as it lowers fever and ease muscle ache. Some water is boiled and mixed with green twigs. Then an infusion is prepared and drunk as a tea.

-Marameyeh – Sage: this herb is used to ease stomach aches. We boil water and add some leaves. After infusion, we drink it as a tea.

-Sheeh – Wormwood: this herb/shrub is used to treat skin wounds. Some branches are taken and macerated in some olive oil to make a paste in a mortar. This pasta is then applied on the injury with a bandage.

It was a nice hiking day !

The bravest of you may want to climb, the well known Jabal Umm ad Dami, the highest mountain in Jordan 1,854 meters high above sea level.

From the top, you can admire the Saudi Arabian desert and the Red Sea’s blue waters in the horizon.

Quiet on the set ! Action ! – One Minute Cinema

Did you know that the Wadi Rum was one favourite spot for cinema ? Particularly appreciated for its unique barren desert landscape, strong red colours and sandstones cliffs with a stunning scenery concentrated over a relatively small area. The desert was featured in about twenty movies, mainly sciences fictions ones. It includes Laurence of Arabia, Prometheus, Dune, Star Wars : The Rise of Skywalker and Rogue One, Transformers : Revenge of the Fallen, the Martian, Theeb. I let you guess to which movie refer the pictures…😉

It's time for our ritual tea break well deserved after a day hiking 🙂

Tashrab shay? Would you to drink some tea ?
When you join us for a tour and overnight stay in Wadi Rum, we will be happy to prepare it for you throughout the day.

We like to prepare it with loose black tea leaves, sugar and water. The tea is brewed over the fire which brings a subtle smoky flavour. We may also add herbs like thyme, sage and mint, spices like cinnamon sticks and cardamon pods for a more sophisticated taste.

Sleeping in the open air in the desert is a good way to admire the starts, far from any light pollution.

Wadi Rum has a number of factors that make one of the best locations in the world for stargazing :

-Low population density limiting light pollution
-Predominantly clear skies
-Low latitudes with both significant nighttime hours and increased range
-The altitude

Find constellations while enjoying the night sky. You may be surprised by the number of stars visible to the naked eye. A great opportunity to enjoy the beauty of nature and the galaxy. It also provide a good spot to observe the Milky Way, meteor showers, to identify constellations and navigational stars.

About the Wadi Rum

The Wadi Rum also known as the Valley of the Moon, is a valley carved out of sandstone and granite rocks in southern Jordan, 60 km east of Aqaba. Its desert landscapes include canyons, natural arches, cliffs and caves. The rock formations were formed about 30 million years ago and Its sandstone cliffs rise to an altitude of almost 1900 metres.

Due to its scenic beauty and cultural treasures, the Wadi Rum was recognised by UNESCO in June 2011 as a protected area of 74,000 hectares, listed as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site.

The presence of drawings, engraved inscriptions and archaeological remains testify to 120 centuries of human occupation. More than 25,000 petroglyphs and 20,000 inscriptions trace the beginnings of alphabetic writing and the evolution of human thought, pastoral, agricultural and urban activities in the region.

The Wadi Rum is inhabited by the Bedouin tribe of the Zalabyah who are now half settled in the village at the entrance of the desert. Nevertheless, the Bedouins of Wadi Rum, including Mahmoud and his family, continue to live directly in the desert and it is this that they wish to show you.
