The grave of the last sh**un, the 15th Tokugawa sh**un, can be found in Yanaka Cemetery near Ueno. After the sh**unate government was abolished in the mid-19th century, he was granted the title of Duke, and the new government allowed him to establish a new official Tokugawa family. This place has since been used as the family grave.

Today, his great-grandson was the last male to inherit the Tokugawa surname (The main line of Tokugawa family still exists) before his passing. Following his death, his niece was appointed as the official heir of the last sh**un’s family. She is currently in her 50s, but after her death, this historically significant family will cease to exist.

Many small statues of a two-headed snake holding “Kin-no-Unko” were offered above the holy cave within the precincts of Taishakuten Buddhist Temple in Tokyo. It may not be polite to translate “Kin-no-Unko” into English here, so feel free to look it up if you’re curious. 🤣 Regardless, the golden object is considered a symbol of good luck and is believed to bring fortune to those who possess it.

A gigantic torii gate stands beautifully in the cold evening in Tokyo. Torii gates, symbols of Shintoism—the native religion of Japan—are commonly found at the entrances of Shinto shrines. They signify the boundary between a sacred area and the rest of the world, serving to protect the shrine from evil spirits. There are two main styles of torii gates. This one features a simple, straight design, with horizontal crosspieces that are also straight. The other style is more decorative, with a top crosspiece that curves upward.

The famous Shibuya Crossing is located right next to Shibuya Station. The term “Shibuya” derives from the name of a clan that ruled this area long ago. Today, Shibuya is one of the 23 boroughs (special districts) of the Tokyo Metropolis and has its own mayor and assembly. The population of Shibuya City is approximately 230,000 residents. Nearly a quarter of a million people live within about 5.8 square miles of land, making it a densely populated area. The city includes other famous districts such as Harajuku, Omotesando, and Sendagaya.

I also noticed this gently smiling Jizō Bodhisattva statue near Zenkoji Temple. The statue was built based on the famous poem “念ずれば花ひらく” (If you keep praying, the flower will bloom), written by the Buddhist poet Shushin Kajii. Reflecting on this poem, I realized that there are similar sentiments expressed in the Bible, such as in Matthew’s verse: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find.”

I always find it fascinating to discover similarities between different religions and cultures in various parts of the world.

This super cute statue is called Mujina Jizō, and it can be found in front of one of the temple lodgings along the main path to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano. The Japanese term “Mujina” refers to animals, particularly tanuki (raccoon dogs), while “Jizō” refers to one of the Bodhisattvas often found along roadsides throughout Japan.

According to legend, a long time ago, a mujina felt deep guilt and shame for having to take other lives to feed itself. Seeking forgiveness, it decided to visit Zenkoji Temple to pray for mercy from Buddha. The mujina transformed into a human to make the journey and arrived at a temple lodging. However, its true form was revealed when it was bathing, and it was forced to flee before being able to pray at the temple.

When a monk heard the story of the mujina, he felt sympathy for the creature, who couldn’t complete its prayer. To honor the mujina’s intentions, the monk built a lantern for it. This lantern still stands within the precincts of Zenkoji Temple today.

The adorable bronze statues of the Bodhisattva and the mujina were created inspired by the legend of the Mujina designed by Satoshi Yabuuchi, a professor at Tokyo University of the Arts.

As the winter solstice has passed, the days are gradually getting longer. When I left the office at 5 p.m. yesterday, I could still see sunlight in the western sky over Tokyo. It was so beautiful and created a truly magical atmosphere.

Yesterday, I led my first Mt. Fuji tour of 2025. Since it snowed a few days ago, most of the Fuji Subaru Line (the toll road leading to the 5th Station) was closed. Instead, I decided to take my guests to Oishi Park, located on the opposite side of Lake Kawaguchi. Although the left side of Mt. Fuji’s peak was covered with clouds, my guests seemed happy that they could take many beautiful photos of the mountain.

The white Indian-style pagoda located in Peace Park, Gotemba, was built in the 1960s by a local entrepreneur. Amazingly, this pagoda has remained brilliantly white despite standing here for so many years. Someone must work tirelessly to maintain it and keep it looking this pristine.

India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, donated genuine relics of Buddha to the founder of the pagoda. These relics have been carefully preserved inside the pagoda ever since.

This is the official mascot of World Expo 2025, which is scheduled to be held in Osaka. Its name is Myaku-Myaku. The Japanese term myaku means “pulse,” conveying the idea of something continuing steadily over a long period. I love its design, which is both half-creepy and half-cute.

My hometown, Toyohashi City, is situated approximately 250 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. During the samurai era, it was known as Yoshida, and the ruins of Yoshida Castle can still be found by the Toyogawa River. The city flourished as an important strategic location for centuries.

Although international tourists rarely pay attention to Toyohashi, it offers plenty of wonderful places to explore. Best of all, it’s just one hour and twenty minutes from Tokyo by Hikari Shinkansen.

Why not visit my lovely hometown someday?

I visited a local historical Buddhist temple called Sekigan-ji Temple with my father, my sisters, their kids, and my family in my hometown. The temple was established in the 8th century, and one of my classmates is the hereditary monk there.

We took a pleasant walk around the temple and hiked up the hill behind it, which brought back fond memories of my childhood.

Just like the custom of exchanging Christmas cards in the West, we have a tradition of sending postcards with New Year’s greetings, often featuring family or children’s photos. This year, we sent about 20 cards to our family members, relatives, and friends with photos of our kids.

Although this tradition is becoming less popular year by year, it’s still lovely to receive “physical cards” once a year from distant family and friends.

Do you know what these are? They’re sake barrels! These decorative barrels, wrapped in straw mats and ropes, are often used at ceremonial events and as New Year’s ornaments. While they come in various sizes, these are the largest. Each barrel can hold up to 36 liters of sake.

Traditionally, Japanese people enjoy sake during Oshogatsu (New Year’s celebrations).

Toyota’s flagship luxury minivans, the Alphard and Vellfire, are among the most popular vehicles in Japan. When hiring a private guide, an Alphard or Vellfire is often used as the transportation vehicle. However, be cautious! If the vehicle has a white license plate and the guide does not hold a national guide-interpreter license, it is completely illegal.

In Japan, only licensed guide-interpreters are permitted to use personal vehicles with white license plates to transport international guests. If the guide is not licensed, the vehicle must be registered for commercial use. All commercial vehicles in Japan, including taxis and Uber, are required to have green license plates.

This is crucial information for international travelers. Many illegal self-driven guides, particularly in Tokyo, operate without a proper license. These individuals often use Toyota Alphards or Vellfires and are typically non-native Japanese permanent residents. However, 99% of them are reportedly unlicensed as national guide-interpreters.

Unfortunately, major online travel agencies like TripAdvisor (Viator) and others allow such illegal self-driven guides to sell their tours on their platforms. Even if they have excellent reviews, they might still be operating illegally. If an incident occurs during the tour, there is a significant risk that insurance will not cover it.

To ensure your safety, always check the color of the vehicle’s license plate and confirm whether the driver holds a certified guide-interpreter license. This is especially important when being picked up at Haneda or Narita Airport or before starting a tour. Taking these precautions could save your life.

In Japan, Christmas is literally over after the 25th. By the 26th, Christmas trees and decorations at commercial facilities, shops, and hotels are quickly taken down and replaced with New Year’s decorations, such as pairs of bamboo ornaments with pine branches. However, the festive lights around town remain lit!

Japan Gray Line offers Mt. Fuji & Hakone tours every day until December 31st. The last Tokyo bus tour of the year will be available tomorrow, December 28th.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate!

Speaking of Christmas, we have a rather unusual custom here in Japan. Many people believe that fried chicken is a “proper” Christmas dish. This tradition began in the 1970s when KFC Japan launched a major advertising campaign promoting the idea of “KFC for Christmas.” It quickly caught on and has since become a widespread tradition across the country.

These days, you’re considered lucky if you can get a KFC party barrel without a reservation. If not, you can still grab fried chicken at major convenience stores like Family Mart, Seven Eleven, or Lawson. 🍗
