Ohenro – Shozanji
Have you heard of Ohenro? The Shikoku Ohenro Pilgrimage is the Buddhist pilgrimage visiting 88 temples in Shikoku Island. The pilgrimage was started by Buddhist Monk Kudai (Kobo Daishi) 1,200 years ago. The whole circular route takes 40-50 days to complete on foot, but it is of course possible to enjoy the part of the route. Today, I walked in Tokushima prefecture, called as the place of self-awakening in Ohenro, since this is where the pilgrimage starts. The walking path from the 11th temple Fujiidera to the 12th temple Shozanji (and going on...) is said to be one of the most challenging parts. Though not overly strenuous, it was indeed challenging with steep ups and downs. Since the trail from 11th to 12th is unpaved, allowing us to imagine what it was like to do the pilgrimage long ago. No convenience stores nor vending machines along the way, instead, the route is dotted with smaller statues, temples and pastoral villages and surrounded by cedar and other trees for the most part. Following the footsteps that Kobo Daishi and pilgrims walked is really rewarding.

Mt. Nokogiri, "the saw-tooth mountain" in Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture is our favorite day trip destination from Tokyo. Jigoku Nozoki, "peep of hell" is a popular and thrilling observation point where you can stand at the edge of mountain. Also, as the mountain is the premises of Nihon Temple, you will enjoy a sacred ambiance and monuments during hiking, such as Great Buddha sculptures and a hundred rakan statues, etc.

Himeji Castle is arguably the most spectacular castle in Japan, and is registered both as a World Cultural Heritage Site and a National Treasure. After the 5 years of renovation, it reopened in March 2015 and has been attracting many tourists from all over the world.

When you have a chance to visit Himeji, it is also recommended dropping by Mt. Shosha for Engyoji Temple where wooden buildings and nature exist together in harmony. “The Last Samurai” (Hollywood movie) was partially shot here on the mountain.

Since Mt. Fuji was registered as UNESCO World Heritage site, more and more people visit there to admire its beauty.
Some climb to the summit, and others enjoy the closer look from the 5th station, but what we would like to recommend is 1.5 hour hiking at Ochudo (elevation of 2,400 meters).

Last week Michi Travel staff members enjoyed pretty alpine flowers and fresh green needles of pine trees along the path. Though we could not see the top of Mt. Fuji, the crisp air made us so refreshed!!

You can still enjoy Mt. Fuji hiking without climbing to the top. In September and October, visitors can enjoy autumn foliage and a panoramic view of Japan Alps and other mountain ranges in the area on over 2,000 metre high. Last week, we enjoyed 2 hour hiking as a day trip from Tokyo. On the next day, first snow was observed on top of Mt. Fuji.
