During fireworks festivals, many street stalls are lined up around the venue. 🎆
A street stall, in Japanese 屋台 “yatai”, is a mobile store that sells food, drinks, toys, and more.

Typical foods are 焼きそば “yakisoba” (stir-frying noodles with meat and vegetables in a sweet sauce), お好み焼き “okonomiyaki” (a pancake-shaped dish obtained mixing flour, meat and vegetables, then cooked on an iron plate called “teppan”), soy sauce-flavored deep-fried chicken and fluffy cotton candy. 🍡

There are many games you can play at the stalls: goldfish scooping, yo-yos, shooting, and quoits are some of the most popular with children. 🤹‍♂️
Goldfish scooping consists in catching a goldfish, in Japanese 金魚 “kingyo”, from a water tank with a net made of thin paper. 🐟
Yo-yo in consists in taking a small water balloon with a hook hung on a thin piece of paper.

Fireworks festivals are held throughout Japan every year between July and August. 🎆
The size of the events varies from place to place, but in large-scale ones about 20,000- 30,000 fireworks are launched.
The duration of the fireworks show is about 1 hour and every summer about 1.5 million visitors attend these festivals.

There are various types of fireworks, in Japanese 花火 “hanabi”: colorful circle ones, those in the shape of characters, fireworks that hang down like a willow, and those that create many small fires after being exploded.
In Japan see the fireworks covering the sky at night is a typical summer viewing that you can’t miss!

The author created this artwork for the Japanese national holiday of 「海の日」“Umi no Hi”, aka “Marine Day”, during which homage is paid to the sea.
A calm sea on the horizon is the allegory of a serene soul: “There are no waves in peaceful mind.” “Shizukana kokoro ni nami wa tatanai.”).

The author created this artwork for the Japanese national holiday of 「七夕」“Tanabata” (literally “evening of the seventh”), the Japanese “Star Festival” which is celebrated every year on July 7th.
It celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented respectively by the stars Vega and Altair). According to legend, the Milky Way separates the lovers who are allowed to meet each other only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar.
During this festivity it is customary to hung to bamboo trees some paper strips called 「短冊」“tanzaku”, handwritten wishes and hopes for the future.
The illustration depicts some “Tanabata”’s most iconic symbols: the moon, the bamboo tree and a brightly colored Japanese wind chime「風鈴」“fūrin”, with written on it: 「信念」“shinen”, “belief”.

This and more than 80 other artworks are purchasable on Instagram/Facebook shop and WActivity JAPAN Official Store.

During the festivity of “Tanabata” 「七夕」 it is customary to hung to bamboo trees wishes and hopes for the future written on strips of colored paper called “tanzaku”「短冊」. 🎋
It is said that if it rains on July 7th, the Milky Way will overflow and the lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi will not be able to meet.
On the other hand, if it is a sunny day, Orihime and Hikoboshi can finally meet each other, then the handwritten wishes will come true.
Unfortunately, “Tanabata” held in the rainy season, so it is rarely sunny.

“Tanabata” 「七夕」 (literally “evening of the seventh”) is the so-called “Star Festival” originating from the Chinese “Qixi Festival”, brought to Japan in the 8th century.
It celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented respectively by the stars Vega and Altair). 🌌
According to legend, Orihime, a seamstress, wove beautiful clothes on the heavenly river, represented by the Milky Way (in Japanese “Amanogawa”). Because Orihime worked hard she became sad and despaired of ever finding love. Her father, the God of the Heavens, loved her dearly and arranged for her to meet Hikoboshi, the cow herder who lived on the other side of the Milky Way. The two fell in love instantly and got married. Their love and devotion were so deep that Orihime stopped weaving and Hikoboshi allowed his cows to wander the heavens.
Orihime’s father became angry and forbade the lovers to be together, but Orihime pleaded with him to allow them to stay. He loved his daughter, so he decreed that the two star-crossed lovers could meet once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunisolar calendar.
In Japan, the Milky Way can be seen in summer and winter, but unfortunately the light of the beautiful stars is so faint that it is difficult to see from cities like Tokyo.

During “Children's Day” (「子供の日」“Kodomo no Hi”), it is custom to display some carp streamers, in Japanese 「鯉のぼり」“koinobori”, one of the most iconic symbols of this festivity. Since ancient times, the colorful koi carps are an allegory of strength and determination 🎏
They are usually made of paper or cloth and have different patterns.
The black one is called 「真鯉」“magoi” and represents the father.
The red one is called 「緋鯉」“higoi” and, even though it originally represented the eldest son, represents the mother.
Sometimes it is added a blue little one called 「子鯉」“kogoi” to represents the children.

Calligrapher Kōji Takano created this artwork on the occasion of “Children's Day” (「子供の日」“Kodomo no Hi” aka 「端午の節句」“Tango no Sekku”).
It depicts 「金太郎」“Kintarō”, aka “Golden Boy”, one of the most iconic characters of Japanese folkloristic imaginary.
This legendary hero, commonly represents holding an axe and wearing only a bib with the kanji for “gold” on it, represents youthful vitality and strength. The samurai helmet, in Japanese 「兜」“kabuto”, is another element that represents strength and courage. In this case it is made of origami, emphasizing the playful aspect of this festivity.
The sentence reads: “Today's step creates the future.” “Kyō no ippō ga mirai wo tsukuru.”).

“Children's Day” (「子供の日」“Kodomo no Hi”) is a Japanese festivity held on May 5th, the last day of Golden Week holidays.
Designated as a national holiday by the Japanese government in 1948, “Children's Day” has its roots in one of the five annual traditional ceremonies:「端午の節句」“Tango no Sekku”, that originally, as opposed to the “Hinamatsuri” festivity which celebrated the girls, celebrated only the male children.
Even today, the holiday focuses more on boys, praying for their healthy growth and happiness.
Since ancient times,「兜」“kabuto”, the samurai helmet, and 「鎧」”yoroi”, the samurai armor, have been displayed during this period as a symbol of vitality and strength.
Helmets and armors represent also the desire to protect boys from illness and accidents, growing strong.

「花見団子」“hanami dango” are sweet rice dumplings often eaten during the cherry-blossom viewing 🍡
This custom seems to date back to the Edo period (1603 - 1867).
These traditional Japanese sweets (“wagashi”) are usually made up of three colors: pink, white and green.
Pink like cherry blossoms in spring, white like snow in winter, green like Japanese mugwort in summer.
Over the years was also coined the term 「花より団子」“hana yori dango”, literally “dumplings over flowers”, a proverb that means people have more interest in the practical over the aesthetics.

Calligrapher Kōji Takano created this artwork during spring season and, inspired by the famous Sumida River in Tokyo, depicts a river of cherry petals carried by the current.
On a background of soft pastel colors, sinuous watercolor lines reveal the most iconic symbol of Japanese spring: 「桜」“sakura”, “cherry blossom”. Inside the black circle is written the word「夢見草」”yumemigusa”, more romantic term to refer to sakura, that embodies the poetic connotation about the cherry blossoms in Japanese imaginary.
The author suggests: “Look up at the blue sky”, where the petals are falling down and a new beginning begins.

The banquet while admiring the sakura in full bloom is an event awaited with trepidation and an important moment of sharing in Japan.

Calligrapher Kōji Takano created this artwork during spring season and depicts the allegoric figure 「梅に鶯」“Ume ni Uguisu”, ”Japanese Bush Warbler on a Plum Tree”.
The Japanese brush warbler is also called 「春告鳥」”harutsugedori”, “spring-announcing bird”, and the plum tree 「春告木」”harutsugegusa”, “spring-announcing tree”. Indeed, they are some of the earliest signals of the beginning of spring.
The term “Ume ni Uguisu” was coined by the “Man'yōshū”, Japan’s oldest “waka” poems anthology compiled during the Nara period (AD 710 - 794).
Today, it is used to express two things that go perfect together.
The author add the word 「以心伝心」”ishindenshin”, literally “telepathy”, to emphasize this indissolubility and this natural mutual understanding.

23/03/2022

It is said that the “flower viewing”, 「花見」“hanami”, was practiced by the aristocrats during the Nara period (AD 710 - 794), and originally consisted in admiring the plum blossoms.
It was only with the Heian period (794 - 1185) that the cherry blossoms became more popular.
Farmers used to refer to the cherry blossoms as a spring-announcing flower, coincided with the time of rice planting.
In the Kamakura period (1185 - 1333), samurai and tradesmen started to practice “hanami”, and cherry trees were been planted in many temples and streets.
In the Edo period (1603 - 1867), cherry-blossom viewing became popular custom for common people as well.
After the Meiji era (1868 - 1912), many cherry trees were burned due to the effects of the war, but after that, the beautiful flowers spread all over the country, and it became possible to see cherry blossoms essentially everywhere.
