A few days ago, we had the great pleasure of hosting a family from the US who experienced the traditional Japanese craft of Maki-e for the first time. 👩‍🎨 👨‍🎨

Maki-e is a decorative technique that involves applying metallic powders onto a lacquered surface to create a wide range of designs. Used to embellish lacquerware such as plates and cups, it has been practiced in Japan for centuries and is highly regarded for its beauty and craftsmanship.

They had so much fun creating their own designs and playing with the different materials and colorful powders!

The LACQUERWARE MAKIE EXPERIENCE is one of the many activities that make up our “Omotenashi Nihonbashi” program, a selection of authentic Japanese cultural experiences aimed at visitors from all over the world. The guidance and language support of our International Concierges will help you to immerse in your experience fully, and make your stay in Japan even more meaningful and special.

Add a touch of Japanese tradition to your home and celebrate the Hinamatsuri Festival (Girls' Day) with these newly designed Tenugui made by Todaya store! 🎎
✴︎ The dolls which make up a Hinamatsuri altar are dressed in the traditional court attire of the Heian period and the pair you can see in at the top of the first photo represent the Emperor and Empress of Japan, while the other characters represent the ladies of the court, musicians, and other attendants (a close-up in the last photo).
✴︎ In the second photo, you can find the snacks typically enjoyed on this special day. In particular, the famous sweet-flavored rice crackers known as "hina arare". These crackers are usually colored in pastel pinks, yellow, whites and greens simbolizing the four seasons and a wish for the health of one's daughters throughout the year.

Looking for good fortune? Well, look no further!

In Ningyocho you will find the Shichifukujin (七福神) or the Seven Gods of Fortune who are believed to grant good luck!
The famous Shichifukijin Meguri (七福神巡り) is a pilgrimage to these seven shrines scattered around Ningyocho, each one dedicated to one of the Seven Gods.
It’s particularly popular during he New Year to bring yourself good luck, however you can also visit them throughout the whole year.

This time, we have taken a peek for you of the Suitengu Shrine, dedicated to the only Goddess amongst the seven: Benzaiten.
Benzaiten is said to bless visitors with safe childbirth, protection from flooding and success in business.
The symbol of this shrine is a dog mother who takes care of its puppy, for this reason you will see the adorable image of a dog quite often in Ningyocho.
Omikuji (fortunes written on small stripes of paper) with a keychain depicting this dog is available for purchase, as well as many other Omamori (talisman) for your protection.

Come visit Ningyocho!
